ACTIVITY I : FOOD FROM FORESTS

In your region, find information about eatable species (flora, fauna and fungi) in forests.

  • Make a list of these in your ENO Diary
  • Choose three species from each group
  • About “Nutritional value”: what type of nutrition does it contain (carbonhydrates, fat, vitamins, fibres etc.)
  • In addition, attach photos or pictures of species under each page. Please note that photos must fit to the same page! They have to be small enough.
  • Choose typical species in your forests. You can use this information in your radio story as well

If you live in a city and far from forests find the nearest forest available and the information. If you have difficulties with this task take contact with forest associations, universities or other institutions.

Activity II: Go to a local forest with your students. During this one hour trip list down all the eatable species that you find there. Take photos of forest and eatable species. Go back to classroom.

NOTE: If you have a portable recorder please take it with you in the forest. Make a live report there. You can use this in your Activity III

ENO Material (one message per school)

Make a title: Forest Photos from + your school ID. Choose a category: This Is Our Nature. In the contents box tell us about your trip to forest. Attach 4-5 photos with your document. Save and close.

ACTIVITY III: A STORY FOR ENO RADIO

Make interviews for ENO radio concerning this theme. To illustrate your story, try to find 4-5 photos. In each story, remember to introduce you, your school and country at first!   The deadline for this story is 25th of December 2005.

PHASE I: Planning

·        Choose a topic from the list below

·        Find a person who is suitable for your story, take contact with him/her and arrange a time for an interview. In the interview use either mp3 recorder or computer and microphone.

·        Before the interview check and go through all the questions you will ask.  Send the questions to your quest before hand.  The actual recording will be easier for both of you then

PHASE II:  An interview and recording

  • Check that the volume level of recording is good (high enough)
  • With your voice and gestures, show to your quest that you are interested in this topic! This motivates your guest and makes him/her feel more comfortable.
  • Ask your questions politely, not too fast. Give some space to answers, don’t speak at the same time with your quest

PHASE III: Editing

  • Get your recording to computer and use software like Audacity
  • Cut the extra material and check the level of recording. If it is too low, raise the level (go to Edit).
  • Save the recording -> Save as mp3

PHASE IV: Send the story and photos

  • Send the mp3 file and photos to email address [email protected] . The deadline for this is 25th of December 2005

TOPICS

Make your report in the forest. During your walk in the forest make observations and record them. Record the sounds, describe some eatable species and take photos (Activity II).

B) Young people and forests: A general  interview

Find a person who is expert on this case. It could be a professor from the university or a person who has a lot of knowledge nationally about this topic. Prepare  4-5 questions for this interview. You could ask questions like

  • Tell us about yourself and your work.
  • How important do you see forest as a resource for food in our country?
  • Name the most used eatable flora and fungi here in ….?

  • is it a mammal, bird or lizard etc?
  • do you hunt yourself or with a group?
  • When are you allowed to hunt it, in what season?
