BVP Thailad commits itself to assisting all organisations, both ethnic and student groups throughout Thailand, who are working to achieve development, democracy and national reconciliation in Burma.

The program is growing rapidly and currently includes organizations in:

  • Mae Hong Song

  • Chiang Mai

  • Mae Sariang

  • Mae Sot

Mae Sot

Mae Sot, the home of the Burma Volunteer Program (BVP) is a small Thai trading town on the western border with Burma. It has a mixed population of Thai, Karen, Burmese and Chinese. Bangkok and Chiang Mai can be reached within an hour by air, and bus services run regularly to Bangkok, Chiang Mai and all major cities in Thailand. Mae Sot is the closest point in Thailand to the Burmese capital Rangoon and has become a major gateway to Burma. It has recently developed into a tourist location, complete with Internet cafes and budget guesthouses. Mae Sot is also opposite Burma's Karen State. The Karen are one of the ethnic groups currently embroiled in conflict with the Burmese Junta, SPDC State Peace and Development Council, in order to achieve greater autonomy.

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai lies 700km northwest of Bangkok. It was founded in 1296 and still retains the distinctive moat that encircles the city. It is one of the least expensive large cities in Thailand. Chiang Mai is a city built on the roots of a traditional heritage that digs deep into the soil of time. It is a city with a beautiful cultural personality of its own. In addition, it has been blessed with much majestic beauty in nature. The people themselves are an unforgettable part of Chiang Mai. Handicrafts of silk, silver and wood are timeless souvenirs for visitors from all over the globe. Along with all this, a wide variety of accommodation, restaurants and entertainment all help to make Chiang Mai one of Thailand's prime tourist attractions. Many of the Burmese ethnic groups have their organizations based in Chiang Mai.

Mae Sariang

Located 188 kilometres northwest of Chiang Mai, Mae Sariang is a small town with a few guesthouses and cafes. It is a popular departure point for trekking to the many hill- tribe villages in the area.

Mae Hong Song

Mae Hong Song is located on the west side of Chiang Mai, bordering Burma. Mae Hong Song is tucked away among the mountains bordering Burma and supports a large hill-tribe population. Ethnic groups and students fleeing from Burma seek temporary refuge in refugee camps located in the surrounding areas.
