Q: Who are the students... ?

The students are from Burma and are working to improve the social and political conditions in their own country. They are engaged in a variety of tasks including Women's Rights, Political Issues, Human Rights, and Labour Issues. They are normally teenage to adults who already have basic understanding of English but need to improve to help them in their work.

Q: How long is the minimum period I can volunteer for ... ?

You have to make a commitment to stay for 14 weeks (including two weeks training). Their is no maximum period however this will normally be in periods of three months.

Q: Where do I stay ... ?

Most organisations have offices/houses in or near town. You stay with the group you are teaching. This gives you the opportunity not only to share your skills but also to feel a part of the group you are working worth.

Q: What is the health situation like ... ?

The health in towns and along the Thai border is good. Malaria is almost not existent except in the countryside near the Burma Border. There are decent hospitals that provide very low cost health care.

Q: What is required of volunteers... ?

All volunteers must agree to stay three months. Classes can change on an organisational basis but volunteers normally teach a minimum of three hours a day, five days a week. Volunteer must keep attendance record and submit them with a monthly report. Volunteers should attend monthly meetings where they are able to share any feelings/ideas they might have.

Q: I've heard the Thai-Burma border is dangerous. Is this true...?

There are sometimes problems on the northern Thai-Burma border mainly due to the drugs situation there. The western Thai-Burma border has had very few problems over the past few years. The town of Mae Sot has never had any problems.
