POISONING The WELL

The tomatoes were good this year. There were too many cactus apples though, too many to eat, too many to pickle, too many to give away, and 'way, 'way, too many to harvest. They became so heavy with ripeness that they fell of their own weight, and ripe, they smelled so pungeant and sweet that while on the ground, they continually drew the rats. The rats housed themselves anywhere they chose to hide themselves; as long as there was nil visibility for them they chose to remain where it was dark, and accumulated old leaves, paper, rags, string, rope, and anything else to make ratfloor, ratwalls, and ratbeds for their mating, breeding, nursing, and ratactivities.
During such a year of harvest of high yield of fruits and vegetables there were so many rats that the smell of their droppings and urine were noticeable outdoors. The rats drove the animals crazy with ratstench and and hyperactivity perculiar to many rats during years of great harvest and lots of abandoned fruits which have dropped and rolled onto the ground, too many to remove in time before the rats got to them and built their homes close to the rotted fruit stench and then created more stench by living there after having created rathomes with ratstench so strong it could burn eyes.
Peculiar during this heavy ground harvest of ratfood was so many dead squirrels. So many dead quail and possum were found each day they fermented during the early afternoon heat and created their own smell of death. Peacock eggs were continually abandoned and left to rot while peahens were dying and dead and peacocks stopped scrounging for food and feathers were found during the morning, noon, and night along with dead baby owls.
There shouldn't have been dead owls during such a ground harvest of such high yield; the owls having plenty to eat of so many baby rats. Perhaps the wildlife died of gluttony by having so much ratfood available so near the ground when needed at all times. The little girl went into seizures and they said she had always been high-strung, both she and her brother, both high-strung and allowed to run around like wild things all the time. Neither one of them could concentrate and the boy was always getting into fights.
The mother didn't keep on eye on them like she should; she complained constantly that 'those kids' wore her out running around like banshees and screaming all the time. The girl screamed, that's all. The boy never screamed, really, and those weren't fights he got into really, he just got carried away all the time. Actually, he never got carried away, he had only been into one fight this year at school and it was after school when the other boys got mad because he wouldn't play kickball with them anymore.
The boy had a headache he said at school, and the nurse was going to send him home but he fell asleep on the little bed in her office, and by the time she got back from lunch, he was still asleep, and since it was already 1:00, and school was over at 2:30, she forgot all about him sleeping there because she got another student sick with a sore throat, sick with a sore throat for three weeks, and it kept getting worse, so she forgot about the boy.
The boy was walking home and the others wanted him to play kickball, and he said, "no", he was going home and they got mad and said, "you never play with us anymore, you're just a big baby with your headaches," and after that they wouldn't leave him alone and he just hauled off to try and punch the one who just wouldn't shut up, but when he swung at the guy, his right arm felt as if it were asleep and the punch didn't land square on the guy, and the headache boy lost his footing a little and fell, so by the time the yard guard ran up to break up the fight, the boy was already on the ground, much embarrassed by his fall.
He never said the other boy with the big mouth had not knocked him down. He didn't say anything at all and tried to run to the edge of the schoolyard and its bushes because he knew he was going to vomit and he didn't want anyone to see it happen. "Your boy is lazy," they told his mother, and she replied, "I thought you said he was high strung," but she was so confused after so much work to try to keep the orchard clean, and it was just so much work during such a year of high yield, such a year of so much rainfall the cistern and well were overflowing, and the top had to be skimmed of feathers and Lord knows what every single day.
