*** Nice Weedy Sea Dragon ***
|
Club dives are usually held on the weekend - usually every Sunday, and also the occasional Saturday (or other days during the week) if there is enough demand. To join in, you must ensure that you have organised your equipment PRIOR to the dive or make sure your dive leader has organised it for you. (see equipment hire page for more details). If you do plan on renting, please do not leave it to the last minute - allow at least a few days to get your gear organised.
Also please don't forget to let us know if you plan on coming along so that we know to expect you, and in the case of a delay, that we wait for you at the chosen dive site.
Some of the sites around Sydney we visit are listed below (all shore dives), along with a brief description:
- Shelly Beach or Fairy Bower, Manly - nice easy beginners dive, with a huge range of life to be seen, including cuttlefish, wobbegongs, huge schooling fish such as yellowtail, and even if you are lucky the occasional dusky whaler shark! Excellent night dive too - at night we have come across the deadly blue ringed octopus!
- Fairlight, Manly - on the harbour side of Manly you can experience some great diving that is very different from ocean diving. Although the visability is never great, you can see hundreds of nudibranchs at Fairlight, as well as much other life you don't normally find in the ocean.
- North Harbord, Manly - Hardbord is another easy dive which has some great underwater terrain (large rock walls, swimthroughs) as well as excellent marine life.
- Clifton Gardens, Mosman - this site is very shallow (about 4m), and the dive is around the nets at the swimming enclosure. The main attraction to this dive is the hundreds of sea horses that live on the nets.
- Shark Point, Clovelly - this dive is for a bit more experienced divers, as the entry/exit can be difficult and it is a bit deeper (goes to 20m+), but the underwater terrain is spectacular.
- South Palm Beach - a nice easy shore dive in the right conditions.
- The Valiant (Wreck), Palm Beach - Just off Barrenjoey head is a good wreck dive for advanced divers as it sits in 30m of water. This is a boat dive, and is only dived if a boat can be arranged (have a boat? Let us know!)
- North Avalon - one of our favourite shore dives, but can only be attempted in the calmest of seas due to the tricky entry and exit off the rocky point of Avalon beach. The main attraction of this dive is the terrain, huge 20m high rock walls, and lots of large swimthrough tunnels and caves!
- Inscription Point, Botany Bay (near Kurnell) - this site is excellent if you want to see the incredibly Weedy Sea Dragon (see photo at top of page). There are so many around this area, a sighting is almost definately guarenteed!
See the Dive Logs page for descriptions and photos of some of the sites listed above.
