    Pilot
Pilot is a rock aboard Moya in more ways than one. For starters, he looks a little like a large crustacean, with a shell-like head, and pincer arms. Combine this with the fact that he doesn't move around (he's attached to Moya), and you have a being that could easily look like a rock if he didn't move. More importantly though, he is the steady figure aboard Moya, always there when the crew need him, and always willing to help out when the going gets tough. Pilot

As Pilot of a Leviathan, he is bound to Moya until one of them passes away, and will serve those aboard Moya whenever possible. When the escaped prisoners, Zhaan, D'Argo and Rygel team up with Crichton and Aeryn, they form the crew of Moya, and Pilot is ready to serve. Whilst he spends much of season 1 as a willing helper, he does soon begin to develop a more flamboyant personality. Moya's pregnancy, and the revelations in The Way We Weren't where we learn that Pilot was brought aboard Moya after the death of a predecessor, lead to Pilot developing his own opinion for each situation.

Pilot Though Pilot remains patient with the crew at most times, when his worries for Moya overcome his tolerance for the crew, he has been known to lose his cool a little. When Moya is badly burned at the end of Season 2 Pilot shouts back at Chiana when constantly pestered about general happenings. In Scratch 'n' Sniff he even goes as far as to banish both Crichton and D'Argo from Moya for 10 solar days. Disconnecting from Moya to allow natural bonding to the Leviathan was his most drastic move however.

Pilot had been brought in to replace one of his own species. By volunteering for the job, he sealed the previous Pilot's fate. He was then hastily wired up in a painful way as Crais's plans went ahead to impregnate a Leviathan with Peacekeeper DNA. By tearing free of these bonds to allow natural bonding, Pilot felt a new sense of freedom for both himself and for Moya. This all happened in The Way We Weren't, and was a major turning point for Pilot.

Another thing to note is that Pilot's language is incredibly complex, and translator microbes are unable to interpret it unless the speaker deliberatly simplifies what they are saying. Each phrase can convey a thousand different signals and emotions, showing just how highly evolved the species is. Pilot spends much of his time researching science and other subjects in Moya's huge database, explaining why Crichton's imaginary version of Pilot says "I don't get out much, so I read" in Revenging Angel.

A very likeable character, this navigator, scientist and friend to the crew plays a vital role aboard Moya.
