The episode starts with a vampire draining a victim of their blood. The vampire then leaves a mark on the victim's cheek, a cross. The vampire looks upward, and the viewer sees his face. Its Angel.
After this, we see Angel wake up in bed, shocked at what he thinks he may have done. Was it a dream? Later Wesley discovers a newspaper with the victim on the front page, the cross mark clearly visible. The third victim.

The L.A. police are working the case, with Kate leading the investigation. They so far have no leads. When Wesley confronts Angel about it, Angel doesn`t know if its him, so he agrees to spend a night chained to the bed. Angel finds it isn't him as a fourth attack takes place, but realises it is a vampire he turned, Penn, copying Angelus's ways and defying God. The link between the two makes Angel see things in his dreams.
Angel confronts Penn, but Kate sees them both for what they really are. It takes a lot of explaining, but Angel tells Kate everything about the real world. Vampires, demons, the whole package. Kate goes away though, and finds out about Angelus as well, breaking any bond that existed between them.
Later, Penn kidnaps Kate, and is about to kill her before Angel gets there. The two fight in dramatic style, but Kate manages to end it by driving a large piece of wood through Angel, and into Penn's heart. Angel is severely wounded, but survives. Kate is also wounded, but not physically. We she ever be an ally to Angel again?
