Holtz has Angel captured, and begins to ask questions. He ascertains for himself that Angel is still a vampire, but only now finds out that Angel is no longer the soulless beast Angelus. This does not stop him though, and Angel only manages to escape using a grenade exploded right next to himself, blasting him away from the demons and into the elevator.
Other demons from Holtz's group attack Darla and co, and Darla runs away, trying to leave it all behind. Shortly afterwards, Angel returns. Meanwhile, Wolfram and Hart get to work on the scrolls Lilah aquired during the Holtz and Angel confrontation.

While Holtz goes away to rethink his plans and discuss with Sahjhan the implications of Angel having a soul, Angel goes to find Darla, and tries to help as she copes with the soul now inside her through the baby. She is worried that when the child is born, she will lose all love for it, and try to kill it. Together they go to Cariatos to try and go through with the birth in a protected place.
Lorn, having just finished refurbishing the place and renewing a protection spell (to include humans this time as well), discovers the hard way that explosives thrown from outside the bar can still explode within the bar, so the one thrown by Holtz sets the place alight, forcing the group to evacuate.
Outside in the alley, under pouring rain, Darla is in her final stages of child birth, but the translators at Wolfram and Hart find that "There will be no birth". They are correct. Darla stakes herself to release the child as she knows it won't live any other way. Before she does so, she tells Angel, "This child, Angel, its the one good thing we ever did together".
Just as Angel collects up his child, Holtz catches up, but the vampire hunter lets them go, allowing Angel to pass with his child. Was this fair fighting? A change of heart? Or was it just that a new way to torture Angel has become apparent?
