Kate, a Los Angeles cop, encounters Angel just after Angel had met Doyle and begun their joint mission to help people. Kate had been staking out a club, searching for a serial killer, and at first suspects Angel. She later discovers that he can be very useful as a private investigator, but does not know about his vampire status. However, during a case involving one of Angel's former associates, Penn, a vampire turned by Angel, Angel reveals what he is, and exposes Kate to the world of demons. Not long after, Kate's father retires from the force. She loves him, but has never been able to truly connect with him. However, tragedy strikes when her father is killed by vampires.

For a long time after she blames Angel, but begins to accept the world she lives in. She involves herself in all the unexplained cases, and anything involving mystical occurances. Unfortunately, it isn't long before her superiors find out, and also about her releasing Angel on trust after he stormed Wolfram and Hart. She is dismissed fromt he force, and plans to commit suicide.
