Going after Angelus and Darla was a big mistake for the vampire hunter Holtz. The two vampires went straight for the place where they knew they could hurt Holtz most. They killed his wife and children, and even turned his daughter into a vampire. Holtz vowed vengeance, and killed hundreds of vampires in pursuit of Angelus. Nine years later he met a demon called Sahjhan who made him a deal. He would take him to the twenty first century if Holtz would promise to kill Darla and Angelus. Holtz was told that there would be no other opportunity until then. When Holtz appears in the present, things have changed, Angel has a soul, and Darla is pregnant, but it doesn't stop Holtz.

The vampire hunter begins to gather soldiers to him, humans willing to fight to the death for the cause. Although Darla stakes herself, he still has Angel to deal with. He sees the new born child Angel carries, and a plan forms. Holtz manages to kidnap the child, and with Sahjhan's help, carries him to another dimension where he makes the boy his own child, Steven.
