Chapter 24

The River

Tammy stood in the club watching some pathetic, drugged-out girl stripping. It wasn’t entertaining and she couldn’t really enjoy it even though the girl had a great body because Tammy couldn’t help feeling sorry for her. Her blank eyes were definitely so far away from where she was that you knew she didn’t want to be there.

Tammy wondered what the girl would rather be doing. If there was anything besides the drugs that mattered to her anymore, wondered if she did the drugs to be able to strip or stripped to be able to afford the drugs? She found herself walking away from the stage and going to stand at the bar.

Who would have ever thought I’d be bored in a strip club? She’d brought Milly to work, waited for her to finish her second set, and then brought her home for the last three weeks. Milly hadn’t had any further problem with paparazzi and Tammy figured it was time to listen to Milly and admit that she didn’t really need Tammy’s protection. Of course as much as she didn’t really care about the other dancers, that was how much she liked to watch Milly. And driving her back and forth to work is really the only time I get to talk to her. We run together but we hardly talk then and the rest of the time she’s working on her damn book and she still hasn’t even let me stick my tongue in her mouth, but I still wouldn’t trade my relationship with her for anything else. I’m a sick, sick girl, and I need help.

“You aren’t going to be trouble are you?” Doug asked, walking up to her.

“Huh?”

“Oh come on kid we both know your ID is as phony as Kassie’s boobs,” he said pointing at the girl on stage. “I don’t give a shit, but the last thing I need is for Bud Willis’s little girl to get busted in my club for getting in an altercation with some drunken fuck job who ran his mouth about or worse yet actually touched Milly. We have bouncers; let them do their job.”

“I’m not going to start any shit,” Tammy promised, only a little surprised that he knew who she was.

“See those little smart asses?” He pointed to a table full of college-aged boys all drunk off their asses. “The red head, that’s the mayor’s son. It’s his twenty-first birthday and his friends have already offered me five hundred dollars for a lap dance from Milly.” He must have seen the fire in Tammy’s eyes because he said quickly. “Milly wouldn’t do it and we’re totally nude so I could lose my license if I allowed any of the girls to give a lap dance. But I don’t trust them not to try something and… All I’m saying is I’m going to protect Milly, so we don’t need you in the mix. It will be bad enough if I have to deal with the Mayor; I don’t want to tangle with Bud, too.”

Tammy nodded and she started watching the boys in question.

“Dammit I mean it, kid. I’ll pull your fake ID and have you bounced this minute,” Doug promised.

“I’m cool,” Tammy said, putting up her hand. She looked at her watch; it was almost time for Milly to go on. “Seriously I’m cool.”

She moved towards the stage, right for where the troublemakers were. She could hear Doug saying, “Son of a bitch,” behind her.

“Rickey,” Tammy said, sticking out her hand towards the red-headed boy. He reached out his hand and took hers.
            “Tammy, how’s it going?”

            “Fine. You’re fucking toasted.”

            “Yeah, I’m twenty-one,” he announced.

“Great. Listen… My girlfriend is getting ready to come back out on stage and I would appreciate it if you could… Well keep it to wolf whistles and cat calls.” She still had hold of his hand and she drug him closer. “And if any of your pecker-headed little friends even suggest she give you a lap dance again I’ll have my daddy neuter the entire bunch of you. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yeah, yeah,” Ricky said, pulling away from Tammy. “We’re cool. Right boys?”

            “Yeah, cool,” they all said.

            Tammy straightened up.

Cassie left the stage, the lights started strobing, the sirens started wailing, and then the announcer said, “Ladies and gentlemen, the moment you’ve all been waiting for.  Put your hands together and welcome to the center stage the one, the only thoroughly modern Milly!”

The music started pounding Christina Aguilera singing that she wanted to get dirty and then out from behind the curtains came Milly. She strutted to the middle of the stage wearing a blue, sequin-covered mini dress.

The boys started wolf whistling and cat calling but they didn’t do anything else. Milly started dancing, just sort of swinging on the pole with one hand. Then the tempo picked up and she strode away from the pole. She took her hands and laid them flat over her stomach then she made them into fists, jerked, and the whole dress came off leaving her wearing a black bra and panties with a garter belt and fish net stockings. The boys were going crazy and Tammy’s own heart was pounding in her ears. Milly ran across the stage, climbed up the pole, and flipped down it. Then her eyes met Tammy’s and she might as well have been alone in the room with her. Milly got down on all fours and crawled over to Tammy then she started making humping motions on the floor in front of her. Ricky was patting Tammy on the back hard and whooping. Even that was happening somewhere else in her head. Milly mouthed the words, “I want you,” at Tammy and Tammy’s pants got wet. Milly laughed, no doubt at the look on Tammy’s face and then she jumped up and went to work the other side of the stage.

How fucking crazy is it that I have a girlfriend I’ve never gotten to second base with that I’ve seen nude dozens of times?

The bra came off and Milly threw it down and then she was getting dirty with the pole again. Then she walked back over to Tammy and right in front of her she lay down on her back, arched her butt off the floor, and snatched her g-string off. Tammy was the one who nearly broke all the rules because it just seemed wrong for it to be right there and not have Tammy’s undivided attention. Ricky was now jerking on Tammy’s arms and laughing his ass off, and even this Tammy hardly noticed. The song ended, Milly stood up, and when she did she looked at Tammy, winked and motioned for Tammy to meet her when she came off stage. Tammy damn near knocked people down to get there as Milly in her robe and accompanied by the bouncer hit the bottom step.

“What?” Tammy asked. Milly moved and wrapped her arms around Tammy’s neck.

            “Thanks.”

            “What?”

“I saw you talk to the rowdy, mouthy boys and I don’t know what you said but they didn’t give me any shit and Doug had warned me they might, so thank you.”

“It wasn’t anything.” Tammy smiled stupidly at Milly, but didn’t touch her because she was afraid that A) she’d get in trouble and B) she wouldn’t be able to stop. “Damn Milly, I just… I want…”

“I know.” Milly kissed her on the lips; the club was going nuts.

Doug walked up. “Milly, come on, you know the rules.”

Milly frowned, let Tammy go, and started for the side stage.

“So what did you say to the Mayor’s son?” Doug asked Tammy.

“I know Ricky and Ricky knows Dad,” Tammy said simply and followed Milly.

Tammy walked Milly out to the car, opened the door for her and Milly got in.

Tammy was silent as she got in and started driving them back to the house.

“What’s wrong?” Milly asked, putting her hand on Tammy’s leg.

“Nothing I… When is your book going to be finished?”

Milly laughed. “Soon. Actually it’s finished I’m just doing rewrites now. You miss me?”

“Yes, and I have to go back to school in a week with practices starting a week after that and when are we going to see each other if I don’t take you to work? But… I can’t keep taking you to work because… Milly you’re driving me absolutely crazy.”

“I’m almost done with the book and I’m not afraid to go to work by myself. I told you that two weeks ago,” Milly said.

            “Did you mean it?”

“Mean what baby?”

“Do you want me or was it just part of the act?” Tammy asked quietly. Milly ran her hand up Tammy’s leg to her crotch and delighted in the shiver that went through Tammy’s body.

“It wasn’t part of the act.” Tammy pulled the car up and parked it. She looked at Milly and it was obvious what she wanted. Milly took her hand off Tammy’s leg. “Come on; let’s go in the house.”

Tammy just nodded and got out of the car. She walked around and opened the door and helped Milly out then she wrapped her arms around Milly and she was kissing her urgently. Milly opened her mouth and let Tammy’s tongue fill it. Tammy pushed her gently against the car, her kiss becoming more passionate, and Milly felt her heart pounding and the blood flow to her vagina. Oh God she’s a great kisser and Faye’s right she does have enough tongue for two people. She felt Tammy’s hands slide under her t-shirt and then her hands were caressing her stomach. Milly pushed gently away from her, and Tammy’s frustration was immediate.

“Let’s go inside.” Milly took her hand and started leading Tammy towards the house. Tammy reached back and slammed the door to her car and then Milly was dragging her double time across the parking lot. Tammy fumbled around to get the front door open and once in closed it behind them. She looked at Milly hopefully.

“Your room,” Milly said. If she was even thinking of doing what she wanted to do she wasn’t going back to her apartment and do it on the bed she’d shared with Marcella.

As soon as they closed the door to Tammy’s room Milly found herself being picked up and put in the middle of Tammy’s bed and then Tammy crawled over her, resting on her elbows and knees, straddling Milly’s body. She had one hand under Milly’s head and then she was kissing her again and Milly swore she could feel the girl’s tongue half way down her throat, her every nerve felt like it was on fire and it was obvious that Tammy was wound all the way up.

Milly felt Tammy’s free hand reach around to her back and undo her bra and then her hand was up under her shirt and she had Milly’s right breast in her hand, kneading the flesh till Milly’s head felt light and her pussy was wet. Milly put her hands around Tammy’s waist and pulled her hips hard against her own and Tammy immediately started grinding her crotch against Milly’s.

Tammy pulled her mouth away from Milly’s and moved it to Milly’s neck. She sucked on her throat hard enough to arouse but not hard enough to leave a mark.

Milly wanted her clothes off. She wanted Tammy’s clothes off. She started jerking at Tammy’s shirt franticly till she could lay her hands on the bare flesh of Tammy’s hips.

Tammy’s stomach was hard; her muscels were hard, nothing at all like Marcella’s. Tammy was kissing her again and… She was nothing at all like Marcella.

She wasn’t Marcella.

Dammit why did I have to think about Marcella? I’m not cheating. I’m not! I want Tammy. God I want her and there isn’t any reason I shouldn’t have sex with her except Marcella…

The next thing she knew she’d thrown Tammy half way across the bed.

“What the hell!” Tammy exclaimed.

Milly moved out of the middle of the bed and sat on the edge of it trying to catch her breath. “I can’t! I can’t!” she cried. “I want to, God I want to, Tammy, but I just can’t.”

Tammy moved up to her back and wrapped her arms around Milly in a comforting way. “It’s all right. It’s too soon. I understand. I’m sorry.”

“I’m the one who’s sorry, Tammy. God.” She sniffled and Tammy let her go, got up went and got a box of tissues and brought it back to her. Milly blew her nose and dried her eyes.

“I shouldn’t have pushed you, it’s my fault.”

“Oh please I pushed every button on you I could find to push,” Milly said.         Tammy sat down beside her and took the hand not holding a snotty tissue. “I can wait Milly. As long as it takes I can wait.”

“I don’t want to wait. I want to make love with you. It’s not fair!” Milly blew her nose again then detached her hand from Tammy’s and went and threw the tissue away. “You aren’t a head case. It’s me.”

“You aren’t a head case, Milly,” Tammy said gently. “You’ve been through a lot.”

Milly smiled then looking down at Tammy. “I could take care of you, at least take the edge off.”

“You don’t have to do that, Milly.
“I know I don’t have to, I want to.” Milly walked over to Tammy, leaned down and kissed her gently on the lips then she stood up. “Let’s get naked and see what happens.”

When they were both naked Milly coxed Tammy into the middle of the bed. Tammy felt extremely uncomfortable to the point of almost not being aroused any more because the lights were on and Milly had a perfect body that everyone saw and admired and Tammy was sure hers just didn’t measure up.

“Could we turn the lights out?” Tammy asked nervously.

“No. I’ve wanted to see you naked for months and I like to see what I’m doing.”           Milly lay down beside her and when her breast touched Tammy’s side Tammy no longer cared what she might look like naked. Milly ran her finger around the areola of Tammy’s nipple and Tammy shook.

“What’s wrong?” Milly asked in her ear.

“I just want to be with you, Milly, and I don’t know what I can do that isn’t going to upset you.”

“Just lay there and let me do,” Milly breathed in her ear.

            “But that just seems selfish.”

“On whose part?” Milly started sucking on her earlobe and then her hand moved to Tammy’s crotch. “I want to touch you almost as much as I want you to touch. Since I just can’t do that yet I can do this.” She stuck two of her fingers into Tammy’s pussy then drew them out wet across Tammy’s clit and then she started diddling her. “God, Tammy, you’re so hot. I just want to make you mine.”

Tammy couldn’t speak. Hell she couldn’t even think. Milly’s mouth moved to her breast and her fingers started running in and out of Tammy fast. Start to finish it might have taken all of five minutes for Tammy to climax so hard her body came off the bed and she felt like her nose might bleed.

Milly moved to lie on top of Tammy and Tammy wrapped her arms around her. Milly started kissing her over and over and Tammy could smell Milly’s cum and she really wanted to taste it. She made her hands stay wrapped around Milly’s waist. Milly stopped kissing her and just lay with her head on Tammy’s shoulder.

“God, Milly,” Tammy breathed. “I just want to touch you so bad, I want to taste you. What if I just ate you, nothing else?”

Faster than a normal person could say yes Milly was sitting on her face and she was in heaven just licking and sucking at Milly’s clit till her cum was running off Tammy’s chin and Tammy was holding Milly up with her hands on her waist to keep Milly from breaking her neck. Afterwards they didn’t talk, Milly just wrapped herself around Tammy and Tammy held her and they went to sleep. When Tammy woke up the next morning Milly was gone. If she didn’t smell like old cum and wasn’t sticky she’d have wondered if it had really happened at all.

“It’s not is it?” Milly asked in a tortured voice.

“Honey I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking,” Joanna said carefully.

“Getting oral sex that’s not the same as sex right?”

Joanna laughed. “What are you President Clinton now? Honey you’re a lesbian isn’t that like it?”

“No, there’s finger fucking and fisting and lots of other stuff, Milly said.

“I think they call it oral sex for a reason, Milly,” Joanna said with a smile.

“Oh God what have I done?” Milly was sitting at Joanna’s kitchen table. She plopped her elbows on it and then rested her face in her hands, just feeling like the most horrible person on the planet.

Joanna set a cup of coffee in front of Milly and then sat down across from her. “I won’t know if you don’t tell me and as much as you hate driving in traffic I’m thinking you didn’t drive across town during the morning rush hour not to talk.”

“You’re going to hate me,” Milly said miserably.

“Why would I hate you, Milly?”

“Because I’m a terrible person,” Milly said, finally picking her face up out of her hands. “I’ve been sort of seeing Tammy.”

            “The tall girl?”

            “Yes.”

“I thought she was Faye’s girl friend.”

“Geez, Joanna, keep up,” Milly said with a smile. “Faye and Tammy broke up and Jan and Faye are back together.”

“Then I don’t understand why you’re so upset. There certainly isn’t anything wrong with you dating this girl.”

“Yes there is, yes there is!” Milly jumped up and started pacing. “I slept with her. I mostly had sex with her last night and then I woke up with her this morning and I just have the most absolute crushing guilt as if I killed Marcella myself.”

“Well stop it right now. Sit your ass down,” Joanna ordered. Milly sat down at the table and looked at Joanna. “Oh Milly,” Joanna shook her head. “Marcella’s been dead nearly six months, that’s long enough, but she’s been gone a year and a half. She wouldn’t want you to be alone that long; she didn’t want you to be alone at all.”

“Why wasn’t I enough?” Milly cried. “Why couldn’t she have stayed here for me? What the hell was she trying to prove?’

“Honey.” Joanna put a hand on Milly’s shoulder. “We aren’t ever going to have the answers to those questions. Let it go; let her go. Do you like this girl?”

            “Yes.”

            “Do you love her?”

“I don’t know,” Milly said miserably.

“She’s a beautiful girl,” Joanna said, “a nice one. Marcella would want you to find someone else, to be happy.”

“Oh she’s all for it,” Milly said, “she pushes and she plays games.”

            “Tammy?”

“No Marcella,” Milly said as if any idiot should have known who she meant.

            “Honey, Marcella’s dead.”

“Why does everyone say that like I don’t know it, and don’t look at me like I’m crazy? I’m telling you she hangs out at the house and she screws with everyone’s head,” Milly said. She reached for the coffee and took a drink and of course Joanna was still looking at her like she was nuts. So Milly told her all the things that had happened ending with, “Jan’s heard her and Adrian and Faye and I know she talks to Tammy, too.”

“All right, honey, I can see why you think that, but all of those things could just be coincidences. It’s an old, creaky house and they want to hear her so maybe they do and…”

“She gave her shirt to Tammy,” Milly said in disbelief.

“Maybe Adrian brought it upstairs for some reason.”

Milly sighed. She could tell Joanna was never going to believe her. “The thing with Tammy. You really don’t think it makes me the worst person in the world?”

“God no, Milly. You told Marcella not to go; you tried to talk her into running to Canada. She wouldn’t and you stayed here and waited for her and now she’s never coming home and you should… You need to find someone else. This Tammy might be the one and she might not be, but it certainly isn’t wrong for you to enjoy her company.”

“I enjoyed a little more than her company last night,” Milly said.

            “And I think that’s wonderful.”

Milly nodded. She spent a couple of hours just catching up with Joanna and then she headed back to the house. She talked to Ralph and then sat down at the computer to work.

There was a knock on the door.

“Come in!” Milly yelled and just kept working.

“You want to run today?” Tammy asked nervously. Milly turned around to look up at her. Tammy was holding Ralph, petting his head. She looked like she was about three seconds from either crying or being sick. Milly looked at the clock; Tammy was an hour later than she normally was. Tammy put the dog down and looked at Milly. “Are you mad at me?”

“Oh God, baby.” Milly jumped up, ran over and hugged Tammy. “No I’m not mad at you; I’m sorry, so sorry.” She backed up from her and looked up at her. “I should have at least called you when I got back I was just… I had a moment of toxic guilt when I woke up this morning and went to see Joanna. I’m so sorry it didn’t dawn on me that you might think I was mad, I didn’t mean to make you worry. You didn’t do anything wrong, you were amazing.” She wrapped her arms around Tammy’s neck and drug her head down to her till they were kissing. Her kiss was just as wonderful as Milly remembered it being. Tammy had a great mouth.

When their lips parted Milly said, “I was never mad at you, lover. Let me get changed and we’ll go for a run.”

They ran around the park as they normally did in near silence. They stopped at one of the exercise points to work out and catch their breath.

“I was so afraid you were never going to talk to me again, Milly,” Tammy said not looking up at her.

“That’s never going to happen, Tammy,” Milly said with a laugh. “If you ever piss me off I’ll be talking to you plenty. It’s nothing to do with you; I still have some things I’m working through.”

“I know,” Tammy said. “We should have brought Ralph. It’s not that hot today.”

“We will next time.” Milly stood up. “Come on, let’s finish this up and then go to Rhonda’s. Suddenly I’m starving.”

Tammy nodded. They ran two more laps around the park and then got in the car and Tammy cranked the AC. “What about you?” Milly asked.

            “What?”

            “Are you mad at me?”

“Why would I be?” Tammy asked.

“Because I sort of half assed our first time together.”

“Milly… That was the best sex I ever had.”

Milly laughed. “Liar you used to screw Faye, and she’s practically as legendary as Adrian.”

“But… I never cared about her the way I care about you. I never wanted her as badly as I wanted you. She never made me feel like that,” Tammy said, then backed out of the parking space.

Milly reached over and put her hand on Tammy’s shoulder. “Next time I promise I won’t lose my nerve.”

Tammy sighed with relief like she hadn’t been sure there was going to be a next time and Milly was more sure every minute that she belonged with Tammy.

They had decided they would shower and meet up at Rhonda’s but when she got to the bottom of the stairs Tammy was waiting for her. She reached out and took hold of Milly’s hand.

Mikey went running past them quickly followed by Mary. Mary looked at Tammy and Milly and smiled but just said, “Will I be glad when Adrian and Francis finish that yard.”

“I think she’s roping a bunch of us into helping with the concrete work,” Tammy said. Mary smiled at her an I know what you’ve been doing smile and then caught Mikey and brought him back to the rec room.

Tammy and Milly walked to Rhonda’s hand in hand and Milly suddenly had not even one ounce of residual guilt. She was sure it would come back, but right then she didn’t feel guilty at all.

Rhonda’s was slow but it was a Sunday afternoon and it normally was. Jerry brought them a menu. “What you chuckleheads want to drink?”

            “Ice tea,” Tammy said.

“Just water,” Milly said. “Where are Francis and Adrian?”

“In the back yard. You better prepare yourselves or go somewhere and hide. Tomorrow they’re delivering the cement and Adrian expects all of us to wade in it up to our asses,” Jerry said. “So how’s this going?” Jerry asked pointing from one of them to the other.

“Good,” Milly said with a smile, “Going to get better.” She watched as Tammy blushed.

            Jerry laughed and walked away.

Francis walked in the back door then and headed for the stock room but saw them and made a b-line for their table. “See? I told you she didn’t hate you,” Francis said. She was covered in dirt. She looked at Milly. “You should have seen her this morning all woe is me and I’m burning in hell and she’s never going to talk to me again and I told her I doubt anyone has ever been that bad in bed and she didn’t think it was funny.”

“And surprisingly I still don’t,” Tammy said hotly.

Milly laughed. “What are you doing in here queen of filth?”

“Believe it or not Adrian actually sent me in here on an errand. I know,” she said of the shocked looks on their faces, “but you see I’m cleaner than she is right now and the only thing that could possibly trump her obsessive clean crap is her compulsion to complete this project before I go back to classes and she starts on her next painting. She needs two gallon jars to do it,” she shrugged. “I don’t know, but I have to go. See you cats later.”

Francis went as quickly as she had come. “Who was that dirt-covered woman anyway?” Milly asked with a laugh.

Jerry brought their drinks and took their orders.

Milly watched Tammy as she drank most of her tea in one gulp. She looked at Tammy’s hand on the glass. “You have great hands,” she said.

Tammy blushed again but said with a raised eyebrow, “How would you know?”

            “I’m dying to find out.”

“I’m not hungry. Are you hungry?” Tammy asked quickly, her eyes looking towards the door.

“Yes I am,” Milly laughed. “You know they say anticipation is the best aphrodisiac,” she licked her lips and watched as Tammy shook her head, took a deep breath and let it out slowly.

“Well then it ought to be a doozy, baby.”

“Here,” Francis said jumping into the pit with Adrian and then walking over and handing her the jars.

Adrian took them. She set one down and took the cap off the other one, looked at it thoughtfully, no doubt trying to decide whether it would work for what she wanted it for or not, and she explained herself to Francis. “I didn’t get the plastic cap that’s supposed to go on the end of the French drain and I think,” she walked over and slipped the pipe into the jar. She smiled. “It’s a perfect fit.”

“Well you do happen to be good at knowing just what will fit in a hole.”

            “Why thank you, dear.”

“You’re very welcome,” Francis said. “So I saw Tammy and Milly in the caf.”

            “And?”

“Pretty obvious that Tammy was just having a little butch melt down this morning for nothing. Milly seemed far from mad.”

“You know what though, Franny?” Adrian said. “I so got why she was so upset when she woke up and Milly wasn’t there because she just didn’t know what Milly was thinking. And being with someone who’s buried someone they actually loved, I doubt it went off without a hitch.”

Francis nodded. She knew it hadn’t because Tammy had told her what happened. Francis looked around the yard amazed at how much faster things had gone when they’d had the money to just go down and get everything they needed—exactly what they needed—when they needed it. The chicken house and yard were built though still chickenless because Adrian wanted to pour a concrete floor in the house. The bridge was built. The playground equipment was in the play area and was fenced and the raised beds were all in place and filled with dirt. The barbeque grill had also been built. All that remained was to finish the river, pour the patio, and then pour pea gravel on all the walkways between the raised beds.

Francis knew tomorrow was going to be a lot of hard work but she still couldn’t wait to finish the project.

“Come on. Let’s get out of this hole. We’re ready for the ‘crete.” Adrian actually helped her out of the pit as if Francis hadn’t been climbing in and out of it for weeks.

“I should have been more understanding instead of just making fun of Tammy this morning,” Francis said as they headed back for the house.

“She was acting pretty silly,” Adrian laughed.

“Yeah, but… Well you’re right. Milly is in the middle of something I don’t want to ever have to understand. I don’t think I could go on without you.”

“All right, enough morbid crap. Standing in our almost-finished garden enjoying the smell of the dirt and looking at our mountain, not talking about if one of us croaked,” Adrian ordered. “In fact let’s go get a shower,” she said, lifting on eyebrow.

Francis smiled, “You know you always say showering together will save us time and it never does.”

Milly swallowed hard she just had to get through it one time and then it would be easy. It wasn’t like she didn’t want to be with Tammy, not like she didn’t just want to pop the cork on the bottle of Tammy’s passion and then just lay back and enjoy the results. The problem was that now that they were standing here alone in Tammy’s room and she knew it was going to happen the guilt was back.

Milly had basically ruined their first time together and while it had momentarily taken the edge off all it had really served to do was make them both that much hornier. She just needed to get over it and give Tammy what she wanted to give her.

They were standing together only inches apart and Tammy must have felt her apprehension or maybe she was nervous too because she said, “We don’t have to do this if you aren’t ready, Milly. We could go out or watch TV, or…”

“We can’t go out,” Milly said nervously. “It’s Sunday. Nothing worth doing is open.”

Tammy reached out and put a finger under Milly’s chin and picked it up till she was looking in her eyes. “We could watch TV then or just sit on the couch and talk or…”

“We could make love, that’s what I want to do.”

“Oh thank God,” Tammy said. Then she bent down and kissed Milly gently on the lips. Her hands grabbed Milly’s hips and pulled her against her and then her kiss was more urgent and Milly opened her mouth and then Tammy’s tongue was probing her mouth hungrily and actual thought left Milly’s head to be replaced by her desire. Tammy pushed her against the wall and then she felt her fingers fumbling with the buttons on Milly’s jeans so Milly quickly undid them for her. As soon as she did Tammy’s hand was in her pants as if she didn’t want to give Milly a chance to tell her no and then her fingers were rubbing Milly’s clit with gentle skill and Milly thought she just might climb the wall at her back. Tammy’s other hand moved up the inside of Milly’s shirt to envelope one of her breasts, no doubt knowing Milly hadn’t been wearing a bra. Tammy’s mouth became more demanding and Milly didn’t have any trouble at all matching her passion.

Tammy pushed quickly away from her, yanked her own shirt and bra off and then she grabbed the tail of Milly’s T-shirt and pulled it over her head. She moved Milly over to the bed and jerked her pants down then she sat her on the bed and took her pants the rest of the way off. Tammy was on her knees between Milly’s legs and she started kissing her again. Milly was all the way turned on now and she reached out and grabbed Tammy’s breasts. They were perfect, barely a handful, and firm just the way Milly liked them. Then Tammy’s fingers were working her clit again and Milly had to break her mouth away from Tammy’s because she couldn’t catch her breath. Tammy smiled at her and then she moved her head and her mouth enveloped Milly’s nipple and Milly was cumming. Tammy’s fingers moved into her pussy. She didn’t know how many she just knew the fit was just right. Milly moaned loudly and quickly moved her hands from Tammy’s breast to her back, knowing she might do damage.

Tammy was groaning, too, the vibrations going through Milly’s nipple. And then Tammy stopped everything and Milly wanted to smack her but Tammy didn’t give her much time to think about it. She pulled off her own pants, dragged Milly to the middle of the bed and then her head was between Milly’s legs and Tammy’s tongue was sliding in and out of her already wet pussy and then she was sucking and licking her clit. Milly was just groaning in ecstasy and then while still licking her Tammy’s fingers slid into her again and she searched for and found her g-spot and started working it. Milly had a climax like no climax she’d ever had before and if Tammy hadn’t positioned her shoulders in just the right place Milly might have crushed her head. Milly knew she was screaming but didn’t know or care what. Her body quivered as her orgasm began to subside and Tammy moved to lie beside her, just holding her and kissing the side of her face over and over again. Milly rolled so that she could hold Tammy, feeling a need to just get as close as she could. Tammy held her tightly to her and kissed her gently on the mouth. There wasn’t cum all over her face so she must have wiped it off on the sheets at some point, which was damn curious.

“Oh God, Tammy…” She couldn’t think of anything to say.

            “You’re amazing, Milly,” Tammy said.

Milly laughed. “Me? All I did was lay there and cum.”

            “You’re so responsive.”

Milly kissed Tammy on the lips. “You…” Milly breathed, still not finding words.

“I what?” Tammy asked with a smile.

“You make my whole body sing,” Milly said.

            “Good,” Tammy said, smiling smugly.

Milly laughed out loud, feeling really happy for the first time in over a year. “Remind me to thank Faye.”

Tammy blushed and Milly laughed again and kissed her then she pulled back from her. “So, now let’s see what I can do for you.”

What Milly could do for her was fuck her till she was cumming so hard she was sure her brain was going to bleed. Tammy lay on her back with Milly lying on top of her  running her fingers through Tammy’s short hair and it made Tammy wish she’d cut it a long time ago. Tammy was resting her hands on Milly’s perfect ass.

“Can we just call this our first time?” Milly asked in a whisper, pulling her fingers out of Tammy’s hair and moving to lay her head on her shoulder.

Tammy laughed. “You can do anything you like.”

“Good, because I might sleep right here,” Milly said.

“I’d be happy if I could just keep you this close for the rest of my life,” Tammy whispered back.

Milly laughed. “You’d have a hell of a time playing basketball.”

“Who cares?” In that moment nothing seemed as important as just being with Milly. Tammy moved her hands and embraced her. “I love you, Milly.” Tammy heard Milly take in a breath and hold it. “You don’t have to say anything. You don’t have to feel the same way, but I love you and I’m not going to pretend like I don’t.”

“Joanna asked me if I loved you,” Milly said. “I told her I didn’t know, but I did know… I think that’s the real reason I felt so guilty because I loved Marcella, I did, but now… I do love you, Tammy.” Tammy hugged her tighter and then Milly was kissing her and she was kissing her back and… Well she’d thought she didn’t have any energy left, but she did.

Marcella walked past Adrian and Francis sitting on the couch watching TV. “Hey shit head. When’s the last time you told that hotty that you loved her before she told you that she loved you?”

“I love you, Franny,” Adrian whispered in Francis ear.

Francis smiled, turned to look at Adrian and kissed her cheek. “I love you, too.”

Marcella smiled, walked through the door and into the hall. There was a bright light at the end of the hall just in front of the back door. Marcella frowned hard. She looked over at Stella’s door; Stella was coming home in a few weeks.

            “I’m not going anywhere yet.”

The cement trucks came and Adrian had the whole crew out in the back yard with rubber boots, rubber gloves, and trowels. First they poured the chicken house floor and the patio which was a cake walk compared to slopping cement up the sides of the plastic and wire covered banks of the river. It was just getting dark when they were finishing out the last section.

“Well this was fun,” Jan said. “Let’s never ever do it again.”

There was a communal cry of agreement. Adrian didn’t care they’d all pissed and moaned all day, they’d done just what she asked them to. Jerry, Judy, Yuri, Pete, Ryan and James, Jan and Tammy and Milly and Francis had all worked every bit as hard as she had. She looked at the piece she’d just troweled smooth.

“All right, everyone come put your palm print here,” Adrian said.

“I have to get Ralph,” Milly said excitedly.

“I’ll get him,” Tammy said and took off, and that was what Tammy had been doing most of the day—running around trying to make sure Milly did as little as possible. They were extremely silly and giddy and Adrian was sure that she and Francis never acted like that.

Adrian knew why they were suddenly so love struck, she and Francis had been sitting watching TV when Tammy and Milly had started knocking boots and they’d had to turn it up just to be able to hear it.

Everyone walked over and started putting their hand prints in the cement. Tammy walked out and added Ralph’s to the mix and then Judy ran inside, came back with Mikey and Mary, and they both added theirs. Adrian liked the way it looked so much she almost wished they’d done the entire surface that way.

Everyone was cleaning the cement off their hands. “I’m ordering pizza from Hungry Harry’s, and I’ll get drinks from Rhonda’s. Everyone get cleaned up and we’ll meet in the rec room.”

“Jan don’t!” Francis cried out, and Jan stopped with her foot mere inches from the concrete of the patio. Jan cringed, then turned around, smiled, and led the pack through the back gate.

Francis walked up beside Adrian and put her arm around her waist. “It looks great baby. I can’t wait to fill it with water.”

“We’ll put the pipes and crushed rock in the bottom tomorrow and gravel the walkways. It’s supposed to rain on Wednesday so we’ll be able to see how well it fills. We have to get the PH right before we can put water plants and fish in.”

“One of our books said you could use vinegar to help cure the cement and cut down the alkaline content,” Francis said.

“See? I’m right about you; you are perfect,” Adrian said with a smile. “Come on let’s go order some pizza.” They left out the back gate and Adrian locked it.

Marcella laughed and walked across the length of the patio from the back door to the center pathway and back again.

When Faye walked in the building she could hear the noise in the rec room. She smiled, glad that she wasn’t exhausted for a change and went to join the party, sure she knew why they were celebrating.

She could smell the pizza. Jan met her in the hall and hugged her. “Long day?”

            “Not bad. What about you?”
Adrian tried to kill us but it looks great and she’s giving us free pizza and beer so all is forgiven.” Jan took her hand and led her in the room and the very first thing she saw was Tammy and Milly sitting basically on each other on a corner of a couch and she could tell looking at them that they had done it.

She didn’t like the way she was reacting to them. Didn’t like that she was reacting at all and didn’t really understand why it so wounded her soul to think of them together. They were so obviously together now, like you could almost tell looking at them that they were talking about building a future together, what they wanted from life, how they were going to get that being together, all the things she and Jan never talked about.

Milly is my best friend. I didn’t want Tamm… No that’s not true. If I hadn’t wanted her it would never have been so hard to end it with her. I wanted Jan more but I’m always going to wonder if I wouldn’t have been better off with Tammy. Look at her. I never made her smile like that, not once, and look at Milly I haven’t seen Milly this happy since before we found out Marcella was going to Iraq. I’m such a fucking warped selfish bitch.

“You know if I wasn’t such a cocky bitch I’d be a little jealous,” Jan whispered in her ear, and in spite of what she said she sounded more than a little insecure. Faye squeezed Jan’s hand.

“I’m happy where I’m at, Jan.” She gave her a wicked smile. “Most of the time.”

“I don’t know,” Tammy said to the cell phone, “I suppose I could… Mom… Mom give me a second.” Tammy pulled the phone away from her head and looked at Milly. “It’s my mom.”

“I guessed that sugar.” Milly patted Tammy’s leg.

“She wants to know if we could come to dinner tomorrow night.”

“It’s fine with me,” Milly said.

Tammy put the phone back to her mouth. “Yeah, we’ll come...” She looked at Milly. “She asked if there’s anything you don’t like.”

“Peas and any sort of organ meat.”
“She doesn’t like peas or guts,” Tammy said. She sighed. “No she didn’t say guts but that’s what she meant… I don’t know… Here just talk to her.” Tammy handed the phone to Milly who took it.

Milly laughed and the put the phone to her mouth. “Hello.”

“Hello, Milly. That girl! I swear she has no patience at all. I just wanted to know if you would like to come a little early for drinks before dinner.”

            “Sure.”

            “Would 6:00 be all right?”

            “Tammy is 6:00 all right?”

Tammy just nodded then sort of picked Milly up off of her so that she could go get another piece of pizza. Milly just watched her thinking that she was just the hottest thing she’d ever seen. She sighed.

            “What dear?” Katie asked.

“She said 6:00 would be fine,” Milly said.

“We’ll see you tomorrow night then and Willard and I are looking so forward to getting to know you better. Good bye.”

“Good bye.” Milly closed the phone and handed it back to Tammy as she sat down beside her. Tammy stuck it in her pocket.

She smiled at Milly and said, “It actually took them longer than I thought it would for them to get around to asking you over to the house so they could examine you.”

“Gee now I feel good about going.” Milly laughed. “I want a bite,” she said of the pizza.

“You can have this one and I’ll get another if you like,” Tammy said.

“I don’t need another piece, I’ve already had two. I just want a bite,” Tammy held out the pizza for her and Milly took a bite.

“My God!” Jan yelled. “They are fucking feeding each other now. Seriously get a fucking room.”

“Fuck you, Jan,” Tammy said. Jan just laughed, being possibly the only person Milly knew who took fuck you as a compliment.

Milly took the beer from Tammy’s hand and took a drink in deference to Jan’s observation and then handed it back.

Ralph ran over to check on her to make sure she was still there. She petted his head and then he ran right off to go play with Mikey some more.

She had a dilemma. She wanted to spend the night with Tammy again but it wasn’t fair for Ralph to be home by himself all the time and she didn’t know how she felt about taking Tammy back to her and Marcella’s bed. It seemed to her that wasn’t fair to either of them. It was Marcella’s bed; she wouldn’t want Tammy sleeping in it. Well, maybe the sleeping would be all right, but the fucking would be right out and how would Tammy feel about being in the same bad she screwed Marcella in? But it was just furniture and maybe she was just being stupid about the whole thing and… Well it was the sort of thing she’d normally talk over with Faye, but she and Faye were hardly talking these days and she was sure she couldn’t talk to Faye about sleeping with Tammy.

Tammy stood up. “You want a beer,” she said dangling the empty in the air. Milly smiled.

            “I’d rather just share yours.”

“Cool.” Tammy bent down and kissed her on the top of her head and then took off. Milly watched her walk off and smiled.

She has got a seriously great ass. I have got to figure out this bed thing. If nothing else I’d like to get her alone in a whole apartment where our friends aren’t sitting in the next room trying to watch TV.

Faye sat down beside her. “So what you thinking or need I ask?”

Milly sighed, “I’m not with her just to ruin your day, Faye.”

“I know it and it doesn’t ruin my day. I’m happy for you guys.”

Milly gave her a disbelieving look. “Really?”

“Yes really… All right I’m working on it,” Faye said and laughed. “So what’s the problem?”

Milly told her and Faye laughed. “Hey, dumb ass. Why don’t you do something really radical like buy a new bed? Your girl friend’s rich.”

“I have my own money.” Milly shook her head and smiled. “Lack of blood flow to my brain I guess, thanks Faye.”

“No problem,” Faye said and patted her on the back. “So… What did you think?” she asked flipping her head towards Tammy.

Milly smiled stupidly. “I think you trained her very well.”

“I’ve got news for you. She came up with things I never even thought of.  She’s got a good imagination and she’s also a good listener because you know Francis tells her everything and a couple of the things she does are right out of Adrian’s play book,” Faye said, a wistful note entering her voice.

“I had noticed that,” Milly said with a smile.

“Fuck!” they heard Adrian scream from the hall way.

Francis beat everyone else into the hall and she slid up against Adrian’s side where she stood with the back door open looking at the slab.

Francis saw the footsteps—not too deep—going out and coming back.

“Come on, Jan! That’s not fucking funny,” Francis said, turning to glare at Jan. J             Jan just looked at Adrian, “Dude, I did not do that,” Jan said.

“Jan’s feet are too small,” Adrian said. “She couldn’t have done it anyway, the door was locked, so was the gate, and we’re the only ones with keys to this door and the back gate except Stella—and Stella isn’t here. I just wanted to look at it or I wouldn’t have found it till morning.”

“Some stupid fucking kid must have gone over the fence and…”

“Come on, Jan, they got in here and did that and didn’t even try to fuck anything else up? That’s not likely. A kid with feet bigger than mine?” Adrian said.

At Francis’ shoulder Milly said in a voice barely above a whisper, “Marcella’s feet were bigger than yours.” A cold chill went up Francis’ spine because like so many other things that had happened in the past few months there wasn’t really another good explanation.

“Can you fix it?” Francis asked.

“No, it’s already too hard. Hell it should have been too hard to track up before we left the back yard.” Adrian looked down at her and smiled. “You know what? Maybe Marcella just wanted to help.”

“Bullshit,” Jan said smiling. “She did it because she thought it was funny.”
