| Attack - A sudden acceleration to elude other riders. Biff - Crash. Blocking - When one rider or a group of riders attempts to slow the field to allow the lead riders to break away. Used as a team tactic. Bonk - Running completely out of energy. Also known as "hitting the wall". Break or Breakaway - A rider or group of riders that escapes the main pack. Bridge - To leave one group of riders and join another farther ahead. Chasers - Riders who are trying to catch a breakaway group. Chop - When the trailing rider tries to move under the leader, the leading rider drops to the bottom of the track and tries to force the trailing opponent off the track. Disk wheel - A solid wheel with aerodynamic qualities. Drafting - Riding in the slipstream (a pocket of moving air) created by another rider or riders in the front. This enables the trailing rider or riders to maintain speed with less effort. Drop - To ride away from a rider or group, usually in decisive fashion. Field - The main group of riders, also called the "pack" or "bunch". Field Sprint - A sprint to the finish by the main group of riders. Flyer - A surprise attack, usually by a single rider. Hand Sling - Method of changing partners in a Madison track race. Hanging On - Barely maintaining contact at the back of the pack. Hook - To move one's back wheel against the front wheel of a following rider's bike. Jump - A quick acceleration usually developing into a sprint. Kick - A final burst of speed that provides acceleration for the sprint. Mass Start (Scratch) - Any race in which all the riders start at the same time. Measurement Line - The innermost line on the velodrome surface. Used to measure the length of the track, usually 333.33 meters. Pace Line - A string of riders who alternately ride at the front and sit in. Prime - (Pronounced "Preem") A sprint within a race for points or cash prizes. Pull - Taking a turn at the front of the pack while maintaining the same rate of speed. Razor - A move where the lead rider suckers the trailing rider into thinking he's moving too slow. When the trailing riders attempts to pass, the leading rider kicks and makes the trailing rider ride the outside lane all the way to the finish. Scratch - The full distance in a handicap race; also an event in which everyone goes the same distance. Sitting In - Drafting or sitting closely behind the rider immediately in front. Slipstream - The area of least resistance behind a rider. Take a Flyer - To ride off the front suddenly. Track Stand - A maneuver encountered in sprints where neither rider wishes to lead, usually resulting in both riders remaining motionless and balancing on the track. Velodrome - A bicycle racing track with banked turns and flat straight-aways. Includes many stadium like features and can be indoors or outdoors. Tracks are typically constructed of concrete or wood. |
