Week One
Dec 5-11

Quote
"Politics is made up largely of irrelevancies."
-Dalton Camp

Lyric
Things can be broken down
In this world of ours
You don't have to be a famous person
Just to make your mark
A mother can be an inspiration
To her little son
Change his thoughts, his mind, his life
Just with her gentle hum
- Different People, No Doubt

Poem
We look before and after
And pine for what is not
Our sincerest laughter
With some pain is fraught
Our sweetest songs are those that tell of sadded thought.
Yet if we could scorn
Hate and pride and fear
If we were things born
Not to shed a tear
I know not how thy joy we e'er should come near.
- To a Skylark, Percy Byshe Shelly

Question
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be and why?

Week Two
December 12-18

Picture

Quote
"One must be poor to know the luxury of giving."
-George Eliot

Lyric
I'll sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done
And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Anyway from here
-Run, Snow Patrol

Poem
The day is done, and the darkness
Falls from the wings of Night,
As a feather is wafted downward
From an eagle in his flight.
I see the lights of the village
Gleam through the rain and the mist,
And a feeling of sadness comes o'er me,
That my soul cannot resist:
A feeling of sadness and longing,
That is not akin to pain,
And resembles sorrow only
As the mist resembles the rain.
- The Day Is Done, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Question
Why is common sence so uncommon?

Extra - Something Fun
1. Grab the nearest book. Don't search around and look for the "coolest" book you can find. Pick up what's actually next to you.
2. Open the book to page 99.
3. Find the third paragraph.
4. Post the text of the first sentence of that third paragraph in your journal, and write about it. What do you think it means(if you haven't read the book). If you have read the book, what does it mean, what happens during this scene?

Week Three
Dec 19-25

Quote
"There's man all over for you, blaming on his boots the faults of his feet."
- Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett
(Submitted by Silmarwen)

Lyric
"When the singer's gone
Let the song go on
It's a fine line between the darkness and the dawn
They say the darkest night
There's a light beyond
But the ending always comes at last
Endings always come too fast
They come too fast, but they pass too slow
I love you, and that's all I know
- All I know, Art Garfunkel

Poem
The dragon, flattered or annoyed by all this attention,
Reversed course and flew off
Out of sight
In the direction of Long Island
Pausing only to eat the top 50 feet
Off the leftmost of the two World Trade Center Towers
The Pentagon ignored the report on the incident
-The Dragon Over Hackensack by Richard L. Wexelblat
(Prompt submitted by Silmarwen)

Question
What makes a good person?

Week Four
Dec 26 - Jan 1

Quote
"Better to write for yourself and have no public, than to write for the public and have no self."
- Cyril Connolly

Lyric
"Ever since I was a young boy,
I've played the silver ball.
From Soho down to Brighton
I must have played them all.
But I ain't seen nothing like him
In any amusement hall...
That deaf dumb and blind kid
Sure plays a mean pinball!"
- Pinball Wizard, Elton John

Poem
"And the Raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting
On the pallid bust of Pallas just above my chamber door;
And his eyes have all the seeming of a demon's that is dreaming,
And the lamp-light o'er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted--nevermore!"
- The Raven, Edgar Allen Poe

Question
What are your new year resolutions? Do you think you will be able to keep them?
