"Word Choice"

YOUR TASK

1)  Investigate the trait that you are going to focus your students' attention on.
Find online resources that will further inform you.
Do you need sites to which you can direct your students?  Find them, as well.

2)  Choose whether you will create a teaching tool for yourself, or a learning activity for a
    student.

3)  Choose what technology you will use to create it.

4)  Will you have to get any permissions for what you will want to use?

5)  Reflection question:  What product will you expect from your students as a result of this piece?

MY EXAMPLE

1)  First, I found two sites that gave me more information about Word Choice, and the use of powerful language.  I also checked the 5th grade standards for Writing Applications.

Edina Schools OWL site (Online Writing Lab)

This site is a pleasant, helpful site for students.  There are activities
for them to do.
There are also classroom posters for each of the 6 Traits.

Interactive Six Trait Writing Process
This site is a good learning site for teachers.  It is written for high school writing teachers, but the fact that it is interactive and illustrative is very helpful.

2)  I created a presentation tool that I can show to a whole 5th grade class, and later direct students to revisit.  My presentation tool is be illustrative in nature.

3)  I used a scanner, a clipart program and Microsoft Powerpoint to create this tool.  I also used the  online resources above for student information.

4)  I needed to ask for, and receive, permission to use scanned pages from Jane Yolen's Owl Moon because this slide show is  on a website.  Click here for the email documentation of the permission-seeking.

5) I expect that my students will be able to identify powerful "show, not tell" language from another picture book, and I  expect them to successfully use such language in their own writing of a narrative.
