If
you are an advertising agency
If you are a school or youth group
If you are a hospital or health care
provider
If you are in the entertainment industry
If you are a bar or restaurant
Great ideas that all organizations
can use...
BUILD YOUR TEAM:
Offer awards to your top fundraisers. Prizes can include bonus casual
days, a paid vacation day, sporting/theater tickets, etc.
Encourage friendly competitions between departments, or challenge another
team to see who can raise the most money. Keep a running tally of everyone's
fundraising totals posted in plain view.
Ask employees to submit designs for your team T-shirt. Turn this into
a fundraiser by asking for an "entry fee" then have other employees
"vote" with dollar donations and sell the T-shirts to non-walkers.
Any money you collect can become part of your team donation.
INCREASE FUNDS RAISED BY YOUR TEAM:
Offer employees the opportunity to donate to the Merlyn's
Rainbow: Lupus Walk for a Lupus Cure through a simple
payroll deduction. This is a highly effective way to increase
participation from all employees.
Ask your company about utilizing an existing matching gift program and
beginning a program for your team. Companies can make a flat donation
to the team, or sponsor walkers for fifty cents on the dollar, dollar
for dollar, or even two-for-one. If your company or organization does
not have a matching gift program, talk to management about starting one.
Ask all the men and women in your office to empty their pocket change
into a donation jar every day. Use a clear jar to watch it fill up...have a
department competition to see which jar fills first...or how many jars you can
fill up!
Sell orange ribbons to raise money for your team.
How about intra-team intramurals? Challenge a rival company or department
team to a softball game, bowling match, or poker night with all proceeds
going to fill the winning team's coffers.
GET THE WORD OUT:
Let everyone know you are starting a team. Hold a team talk about the
Lupus Walk for a Lupus Cure in the lunchroom, have a kick-off picnic
and/or set up a team sign-up table. If you work in a building with small
firms that do not have teams, invite them to join yours.
Include a registration card and cover memo in paycheck envelopes. This
is one of the easiest ways to get the word out to everyone in your organization.
Be sure to make it easy to register. Have registration cards placed in
high traffic areas.
Keep co-workers informed via e-mail and voicemail. Post regular updates
regarding the status of the team to cultivate team interest and promote
participation.
Encourage people to visit the Lupus Walk for a Lupus Cure website.
Place Merlyn's Rainbow: Lupus Walk
for a Lupus Cure posters and stands in lunchrooms,
reception areas and on bulletin boards.
Contact your team's previous walkers and ask them to return!
If you are an advertising
agency consider... back to top
COMPETITIONS:
Challenge another ad agency to see who can raise the most money in this
year's Walk for a Lupus Cure (call the Registration Office for a list of participating
advertising agencies). You can also set up a competition inside your
own agency between departments (artists vs. copywriters) or between
employees working on different accounts.
GET YOUR CLIENTS INVOLVED:
If you work with clients who do not have a Walk for a Lupus Cure team,
ask them to join your team. Or, better yet, encourage your clients to
start teams at their companies.
OFFER INCENTIVES FOR TOP FUNDRAISERS:
Incentives can be paid vacation days, casual days, or a day working
with your favorite ad exec.
INVOLVE OUT-OF-STATE OFFICES:
Ask your offices in other states -- or even overseas -- to sponsor your
walkers. This is a great way to raise more money and to promote company-wide
involvement in the Walk for a Lupus Cure.
If you are
a school or youth group consider...back to top
SPECIAL EVENTS:
Hold a Women's Health Awareness Day and distribute materials and information
about the Walk for a Lupus Cure. You'll be educating your peers, and signing
up walkers. Have a bake sale, a car wash, a penny drive, a rummage sale,
or sell school pins/banners/T shirts/bumper stickers (or do all of those
things), with all of the proceeds going to your Walk for a Lupus Cure. Think really
big and organize a concert, dance, or other special event and invite students,
faculty and members of your community to attend.
REGISTRATION TABLES:
Set up a registration table in the cafeteria and/or outside the book store,
student union or assembly hall. Use Walk for a Lupus Cure posters and registration
cards to make the table visible and sign up as many students and faculty
as possible. If the school administration will permit it, take the registration
table "on the road" and visit different classrooms and sign
up students at the beginning or end of class.
COMPETITIONS:
Challenge your school's biggest sports rival to a fundraising duel. You
could also have different grades (or clubs or classes) compete to see
who can raise the most money.
OFFER INCENTIVES TO TOP FUNDRAISERS:
Ask your school principal/dean/activities director about offering awards
to the student who raises the most money. Prizes could include community
service credits, exemption from a gym class, a gift certificate to a local
store/restaurant, etc. Ask your school administrators to set up a "matching
gift" program where they match your top ten walkers dollar for dollar.
GET PARENTS INVOLVED:
Make sure that students ask their parents to walk and raise money for
your school's team or, if they are not walking, to sponsor a student.
Many parents or students may work for companies that have matching gift
programs, through which the company will also make a donation to the team.
Be sure everyone asks about such programs -- it could add hundreds of
dollars to your team's total.

areas. Hang posters and place registration cards anywhere health education
materials are displayed.

year's Walk for a Lupus Cure (call the Registration Office for a list of participating hospitals).
You can also set up a competition in your own hospital between departments
or between doctors and nurses, etc.
SOLICIT MANAGEMENT SUPPORT:
Ask for permission to distribute registration cards and a memo describing
the event to all hospital staff. In addition, see if the hospital will
allow you to make presentations at staff or department meetings.
SPECIAL EVENTS:
Hold a Women's Health Awareness Day and distribute educational materials
and information about the Walk for a Lupus Cure. Have a bake sale, a penny
drive, or a rummage sale, with the proceeds going to your team. Or, you
could throw a party for employees and their guests and ask them to bring
donations to support the team.
INCENTIVES:
Offer awards to your top fundraiser. Prizes can include an extra personal
day, the chance to choose a rotation, an extra-long lunch/dinner break
for a week, etc. Be creative -- offer incentives that your employees will
appreciate. Remember to emphasize the "helping others" profile
of the event.

your company's promotions and from vendors and other entertainment companies.

your members...take up a collection with your actors and ushers or insert
a donation envelope into your playbills.

- The chance to have a demo reviewed by the A & R rep of their choice
- The chance to win a baseball cap, jacket or sweatshirt featuring your
network or studio's logo, or a collection of CDs or videos
- The chance to sit in on a recording session with the artist of their choice

item to the Run/Walk. Offer your patrons a special happy hour night, with
a percentage of the proceeds going to the Merlyn's Rainbow: Lupus
Walk for a Lupus Cure 2002.
HOST A GAMING TOURNAMENT:
If your venue has pool, ping-pong, darts or video games, host
a tournament with the proceeds going to your team.
CREATE A COMMUNITY TIP JAR:
Turn a bad tip into a fundraising opportunity. Encourage the wait staff
to drop their coin tips into a fund for the Walk for a Lupus
Cure.
ENCOURAGE CUSTOMER/VENDOR INVOLVEMENT:
Place registration cards and/or flyers behind the bar inviting customers
to join your team. Create team buttons or T-shirts that employees can
wear to create visibility for your team and make sure that employees invite
all customers to join your team. As an added incentive, consider offering
your top fundraising customer a free meal.
Encourage your vendors to get involved! Ask them to either make a donation
or donate prizes to raffle for your team.
