Personality: R'ben comes across at first as rather nondescript, but only because that's his intention. He likes blending into crouds where he can observe people. He's very good at reading body language and facial expressions. He knows an awful lot about people in the weyr, but doesn't share this knowledge with anyone. It's just satisfying to him to simply know the stuff. He's a fierce fighter, and has a very high pain tolerance - he continues to fly even if threadscored. He rarely speaks on his own initiative in social situations, but he's anything but shy if someone addresses him. He's not the least bit nervous about sharing his opinions, even if they aren't the popular ones to be holding. He's intelligent, shrewd, and very manipulative - able to get what he wants out of almost anyone. He truly is a master of controlling people. Beneath this rather hard veneer, however, he's a lot softer and kinder than he appears. He's gruff, but only because he's been hurt, and finds it easier to be mean first and keep the other people on the defensive.

Background: R'ben was born at High Reaches Weyr and raised by a foster mother and father, as was custom. His childhood nothing special - chores, and exploring the weyr. At the age of thirteen, he stood for the hatching, and Impressed brown Rath. He did the minimum work necessary in his weyrling lessons, but was a natural rider and did well in spite of his refusal to do the work. Soon after he graduated, Rath flew green Preth and R'ben fell desperately in love with her rider, Labilina. For five years the two of them were weyrmates, and in their last year together, R'ben's only child, Raslabalina, was born. The baby was not eight months old when R'ben returned from drills to find Labalina in bed with a bronzerider. He was crushed, utterly furious, and challenged the bronzerider to a duel, which he lost. Furious and humiliated, he requested, and was granted, a transfer from the weyr. Upon arriving at Lunan, he set himself up in solitude, never carrying any relationship past the logical conclusion of fights. In his drunker moments, he has a great deal to say about women and their faults.
