The Ground Type was developed along with the RGM-79E GM Type E as a means of gathering useful combat data that would later be used in the production of the RGM-79 GM. The Ground Type was equipped for use on Earth and only a few units were used in combat. A few of these units were assigned to the Kojima Batallion fighting the Zeon in Southeast Asia. The rest of them fought in the Operation Odessa. Due to high production costs, the Ground Type was abandoned in favor of the less expensive GM.
