Having not taken the threat of Zeon's Mobile Suits seriously at the begining of the One Year War, the Earth Federation had to come up with a way to counter the opposition's Mobile Suits. With the combat data from the RX-78-2 Gundam, the Federation created a less powerful mass-produced model of the Gundam to level the playing field. Although the GM series was released late in the One Year War, the Federation's superior resources allowed them to deploy enough to regain superiority on Earth and in space. The GM, aided by the RB-79 Ball, played a major role in the final battle of the One Year War allowing the Federation to defeat the Zeon forces. After the One Year War, the GM and all its variants remained in service as the Federation's first line of defense when trouble arose.
