The E Type was developed along with the RGM-79(G) GM Ground Type as a means of gathering useful combat data that would later be used in the production of the RGM-79 GM. The E Type was equipped for use in outer space and only a few units were actually used in combat. Terry Sanders Jr., who later served in the 08th MS Team, piloted an E Type in a battle with the MS-06RD-4 Zaku II Prototype. Although the entire team except for Sanders was lost (his unit was heavily damaged), the E Type was still a powerful Mobile Suit.
