Antonio Pimentel
my grandfather
A strict disciplinarian, a taciturn man, slow to anger but then, when he did get angry, spectacular in his displays of justified wrath - I admit that I have taken to dub my venerable grandpa as... "O Carrasco".
Or, at least, "a cara de carrasco"...!
That dubious title testifies of the man's awesomeness, actually!
That said in writ, and since the chosen nickname might appear to be disrespectful to some, I would be remiss if I did not remind anyone who might be reading this that appearances are deceiving - hmm?
Likewise here, in more than one way too; for my fierce-looking grandpa was really a kind-hearted man with a passion for what was RIGHT and JUST.
One cannot blame him -or anyone like him- for sometimes throwing a tantrum or two - in this world so DEVOID OF JUSTICE...
One anecdote that I simply must relate in regards to my grandfather is the following:
"Vavo Antonio" was mighty proud of his German Shepherd dog - a faithful beast that guarded his property day and night, without barking too much, and would have gladly backed him up in his fights - if need be!
A jealous neighbour (the bane of the Pimentels' existence) saw this and act maliciously - in the most heinous way too (as if basic malice was bad enough already - read on, you'll see what I mean...)
I guess that this neighbour had no faithful animal companion - if he had any dogs, they were more interested in chasing the cats around the block than protecting his paltry property, which paled in comparison to the land that the Pimentels owned.
So, this worse-than mere "bad neighbour" decided to POISON my grandfather's dog. And it worked - the dog ate up the piece of poisoned meat (rat poison was used, apparently) and soon, the poor animal fell to the ground - dead.
My grandfather had no difficulty in elucidating that bit of foul play - and it took the entire clan to hold him back, as he was ready, able and more-than-willing to go KILL HIS NEIGHBOUR.
I believe this is also the time that, so full of wrath was my grandpa, that he unhinged a door off its hinges through sheer strength alone - he really was in a hurry to go out, see...?
The family finally calmed him down and convinced him, somehow, that going to jail for manslaughter (actually, first degree murder) over that damnable neighbour was certainly NOT worth it...
Said neighbour was outlived by my grandfather - I believe that cancer was the neighbour's murderer, ultimately...

On the wedding day, the bride looked like she had been blushing a lot indeed - although her porcelain complexion betrayed a tiny bit of irritation on her lower chin... She would look much more splendid and fully-realized after four children, all on the threshold of adulthood (the picture above, far right end of thy screen, dear readers!)
As for the groom - he had his usual allure of wolf-like ferocity about him - an air of alpha male that he would carry with him to the grave, really. He would collapse dead in 1953, while he was out about town.
It was so sudden -and he looked so robust, so rock-solid, as unmoving as a mountain- that absolutely NO ONE expected it...
(To ever happen!)
And, thus,
no one
saw it
coming,
really...

Maria Clara Borges Pimentel - the saintly and patient spouse of Antonio Carrasco Pimentel - sorry, skip the makeshift middlename there!
Joao Jacinto Borges Pimentel should have remained in Portugal - taken charge of the family domain and land - been the NEXT PATRIARCH. For only he, among the three sons, deserved to be. He was the more level-headed; the one with the kinder heart and the hardest-working. It would have been an honor to work with him. As it is, I only got to defend him - represent him - take care of his interests - care for him - speak for him, when he lost his speech or even when he bothered not with French...! Dear dad - you never should have bothered with French or English - ever! His hometown of Rosario, Lagoa is not a HAVEN for the well-to-do... And he, who was BORN there and came from a family that OWNED LAND THERE, SINCE ANCESTRAL TIMES, he never went back... I feel that is an injustice, one among many... But he can go back now, as often as he wants - God Permitting! He is free. He is with God.
Joao Jacinto's older brother, Gilberto. Tio Gilberto was convinced, back in 1993-1994, that my father was going to die first... It was Tio Gilberto himself, the elder, who passed on, in 1996. I bought a condolences card to send, upon learning - Hallmark and all - but it was never mailed by my mother, as she was offended that he had, among other imbroglios, appeared to wish his younger brother dead...?!?
I remain convinced that Tio Gilberto was a kind-hearted man who was often misunderstood - sort of like I can be... The fact is, Maria Clara's first born grew up to resemble his father in many ways; and he died around the same age too... May his soul rest in peace as well.
And then there was one - me, the son of Joao Jacinto Borges Pimentel -
Luciano Pimentel, the 1st...!
Notch one for originality; my father chose a name for me that had previously never been seen in the entire Clan!
With my mother's consent, of course!
For her picture - and my true picture too - you will have to befriend us and, most importantly of all, prove to be trustworthy as well!
Artists like Sao share their picture - I have published here pictures of a younger Rita (nothing too recent - although she is splendid as ever nowadays) and pictures of the departed; but pictures of myself are for close relations only!
Until further notice anyways... (I may no longer have the choice, once celebrity hits me like a truck careening down the main highway always taken by the rich and famous! But, until then...)
I must say - I do take after Grandpa, quite a lot...!!!

A Chamaritta - a typical folkloric song from Portugal's paradise-like islands, the Azores
(really the Aores - but Yahoo may mess up le c cdille here...!)
And guess who sent me this video: Paula Pimentel! Yes...
But it wasn't Paula Pimentel filha do Tio Jose - (she is no longer with us)
It wasn't even Paula Pimentel filha do Tio Gilberto -
she is too stuck up, hung up and lost in herself to perform any nice gesture of the sort!
No, it was the kind Paula Pimentel - da California!
Many thanks to you, Paula - the first and the greatest of the three, no doubt!

And here we have (depending on the video's availability - always!)
Os Romeiros da Ribeirinha!
Do que eu sei, o meu avo nunca foi um Romeiro -
se nao, tinha sido o Romeiro violento! *lol*
"
Amem!

For those without a clue: Romeiros are like modern-day Crusaders
(although the tradition itself goes way, waaaay back too...)
Romeiros are totally non-violent though; even the first ones were!
These are holier-than-Templars types, indeed! :)
They go through long distances on foot, annually
On penance, to obtain a favor from God, usually...
And they simply pray or pray in song the whole pilgrimage through...
