Gilberto Pimentel
Eulogy Forthcoming
Deus Te Guarde, Tio Gilberto
1928-1997
The tall young man on the far right here is the promising young man that -slightly vainglorious as he was- is the elder son of Antonio Pimentel.  He saw himself as the de facto leader of the clan upon his father's death - and even before then... As the three brothers left Portugal to emigrate to Canada and then the United States (Canada was always "easy" - and projections are that, in some 15 years, it will be TOTALLY dependent upon immigration to keep the system afloat... But I digress...) Gilberto Pimentel viewed himself as the leader of the pack - not only his two brothers and sister, but all of his nephews and nieces, cousins and other kins, had to bow before him.
Behind the apparent power trip lied a kind-hearted man though; one who genuinely cared about all those who shared his blood, passion for Fado and the high principles of FAMILIA and TRADITION...  Alas, few of his kins shared such principles so high...
His own daughter (pictured below - far left - fittingly the opposite end of her dad on the picture linked above) never was much of a"family person" - it was amazing and maybe even perplexing to her own mother (also pictured below - seated in front of her daughter) that she liked to hold ME in her arms, when I was but a newborn babe...!
Gilberto's wife and daughter are thus, both, not the keepers of the flame that he carried in his heart and as a CAUSE: he wanted to create unity amongst us all - and when he passed away, he knew he had failed in that.  No one could have succeeded, really.
Family Secrets Divulging - To Come!
He would have loved to have been able to play the viola or the guitar on Saozinha's debut CD - it was not to be, alas.  He played instead with friends and old accomplices - as he loved to, and he left  everyone a VHS copy of that - "para os amigos"...
He had come to the area many times since his retirement - in the years 1995-1996.  Alas, the above album only came out in 1999 - he never heard it.
On September 24th, 1997
Gilberto Pimentel was no more.
