Luke's Quest for Canadian Immigration
About this Website

TarzanThis website is an overview of the experiences and knowledge I gained through my own immigration experience. The primary goal of my website is so that others involved in same-sex partnerships applying for immigration to Canada under Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds don't feel alone in their endeavor. I know that others have done it successfully, but other than LEGIT, I didn't know who or where they were or what it was like when they were applying for immigration.

All information in this website was obtained by me for my own personal benefit during my application process for permanent residency to Canada under Humanitarian and Compassionate grounds. I do not desire nor intend my website to be taken as legal advice on immigration. To prevent that I have attempted to narrate my entire website in the first person so that readers will know that I am speaking of my own experiences rather than providing step-by-step instructions on their own immigration process.

Most personal immigration stories I found on the Web and Canadian Immigration newsgroup dealt with normal Independent, Sponsorship, and Spousal/Family Class Applications. I wasn't applying as a regular independent applicant, so I didn't know what information I came across would be pertinent to my situation. Despite that, I must stress that most information I came across was helpful, and the extra knowledge I gained, even if it didn't directly apply to me, helped me understand the overall immigration process and, in effect, made the process for myself that much less intimidating and worrisome.

TarzanThe most significant bit of information I came across was a mention of LEGIT, the Lesbian & Gay Immigration Task Force, a volunteer organization that is trying to get same-sex interdependent relationships included in the Family Class of Canada's Immigration Regulations. LEGIT provides information and support for lesbians and gay men involved with the immigration process and also make available the helpful LEGIT Guidelines booklet, Canadian Immigration for Same-Sex Partners--How to prepare an application on humanitarian & compassionate grounds (ISBN 0-9680699-0-8).

The purpose of this website it so others in similar situations may benefit from my own experience. At the very least, I hope that other individuals in same-sex relationships applying for Canadian immigration under humanitarian and compassionate grounds will feel that they are not alone, that others are going through and have gone through the same thing they did.

I encourage those who got through the immigration process, especially gay and lesbian couples, to share their immigration experiences--the good and the bad--so that others may benefit from their experience and feel like they're not so alone in their endeavors. There are quite a few places on the web that allow you to have a free website like Geocities, Tripod, and Angelfire to name a few. All you need is a valid e-mail address and one can often use a free anonymous web based e-mail account like Yahoo!, Hotmail, or GMail. There's a lot of places offering free e-mail accounts! Your website doesn't have to be anything like my website. It can be just a single page telling your story (like these or like Beck and Pam's) a timeline, or a journal. For those who think it's too much trouble to make a web page (even though it's not!) something worth considering is making an ongoing journal using a Guestworld guestbook. At the very least, think about it. You can even share your experience in my guestbook.

Best of luck to you for a successful immigration.

Sincerely,
Luke
