Carpet Care
|
Directly
related to beauty and durability of your home's carpeting is the
care and maintenance you provide. With regular cleaning, you
can maintain your carpeting at an excellent level of appearance.
This is one of its great advantages. However, no carpet
can be maintenance free.
The
challenge you face is how do you keep it looking its best
despite traffic and soil. Hopefully the following
information will help you achieve your goal of increasing the life
of your carpet and protecting the investment you have made.
ENTRANCE
MATS
One
of the most neglected areas in caring for carpeting is routine
maintenance. Affecting the life and appearance of your
carpets is the type and quality of your routine maintenance
procedures. Most soil collects within the first few feet of
the entry to your building. Much of this soil has an
abrasive content that can be very damaging once it gathers in your
carpet. A quality entry mat will trap this damaging. If
possible, place your mat before the carpet area. Maintain
the mat by periodic vacuuming, and cleaning.
VACUUMING
Most
authorities consider vacuuming to be the most vital procedure in
carpet care. Regular vacuuming will remove damaging soil and
restore the pile. The longer soil stays in the carpet the
more difficult it becomes to remove.
The
key to effective vacuuming is knowing how often to vacuum.
This will vary from facility to facility but the following applies
to all buildings. In heavy traffic areas frequent vacuuming
is required. With daily vacuuming being the preferred
procedure. The entire carpet is vacuumed at least weekly
regardless of the traffic.
The
most effective vacuums are those powered by dual motors and
equipped with a beater brush. Maintain your vacuums
efficiency by keeping bags, filters and recovery tanks clean.
Slow
forward and backward motion is the best vacuuming method.
This allows the vacuum suction to pickup the soil loosened by the
beater brush. Spend more time in heavy traffic areas where
the soil accumulates.
RESTORATIVE
MAINTENANCE
You
should schedule your carpeting for restorative maintenance at
least annually. Schedule at least twice a year restorative
cleaning in cases of extreme traffic or damaging soil.

Laminate Care
|
Laminate flooring is very durable,with
warranties that cover wear, staining and fading. Laminate flooring
consists of four main components that are bonded together. A wear
resistant decorative surface made of resin based melamine/aluminum
oxide. This material is bonded to a moisture resistant wood
composition based core. A balancing backing is bonded to the
underside of the core. On the top is a clear cap sheet of Aluminum
Oxide, which provides the protection and stain resistance.
Cleaning Laminated floors is easy simply
because laminate floors are so dense, Most, if not all, polishes
will not stick to their surface area. All that is really required
is vacuuming, dust mopping, and maybe a damp towel at times. Most
brands carry a 10 to 25 year residential warranty against
staining, wearing, and fading. They are designed to look good for
many years with a minimum of effort.
Special tip from LFS: use 1/4 cup
of vinegar and put it in a 30 to 32 ounce empty spray bottle
filled with plain water. You can purchase a terry mop cover that
has elastic all around it from Home Depot, which I dampen with
water and place on a Swiffer dry mop head. Then spray the floor (a
small area at a time) with the vinegar/water solution and then
wipe it up with the damp terry mop. It does a good job. There is
no streaking, and you are using very little water on the floor.
One company has come out with wet cloths to attach to Swiffer mops
that contain vinegar and water.
Do not use soap, floor polish or waxes,
scouring powder, and steel wool because they can damage the wear
layer. Wipe up spills immediately. Avoid allowing any liquids to
stand on your floor - including your pets water bowl. For tough
stains, use the manufacturer's recommended product. Test any
product you're unsure of in a less visible
area.
Experts suggest you use mats at exterior
doorways reduce tracked-in dirt. Felt pads under furniture legs
and soft rubber rollers instead of metal or plastic ones help
prevent dents and scratches.
If your laminate scratches, you may be
able to buy a touch up stick from the manufacturer. The repaired
area is often invisible plus it will hold up to traffic and wear
just like the rest of your floor.
When Spots occur such as; oil, paint,
permanent marker, tar, rubber heel marks use a neutral cleaner on
a clean light colored cloth or nail polish remover if needed
Blood, fruit juice, wine, beer, soda pop, pasta
sauce Warm water and/or a neutral cleaner on a clean light colored
cloth. Candle wax, chewing gum First harden with ice, then very
gently scrape. Wipe with warm water on a clean light colored
cloth.
