Nanotechnology
1n 1974, Norio Taniguchi created the concept of  nanotechnology at the University of Tokyo. Eric Drexler fully-developed Taniguchi's thought of nanotechnology, in attempting to instigate the arrangement of atoms in various machines. Atoms can combine with other atoms if their opposite charges attract. In order to combine atoms you need nanomachines that can operate on a very small scale.

There are three steps chemists and other scientists must use in order to produce goods through nanotechnology. First, scientists need to munipulate individual atoms. In order for this to occur, they need to isolate an atom and grab it. Second, scientists need to design specific nanomachines that can munipulate and isolate these specific atoms. These machines are known as assemblers and the final step is to create replicators that can mass-produce the assemblers.
Nano - Scale
Today, nanotechnology is used for two purposes. One, to provide stronger, more powerful military weapons and two, nanotechnology will be used for commercial uses as Drexler had planned for. Most importantly, nanotechnology will create a manufacturing system, which in return will create new manufacturing systems, as described in the three steps to create a product through nanotechnology.
Nanotechnology is thought as the second industrial revolution due to the ability to create various levels of manufacturing systems, such as the Atomic Force machines described in the nanotube section of this webpage. This development of nanotechnology is speculated to be inputted into society in 20 to 30 years.

Nanotechnology evolved so atoms can be manipulated and thus, to create important commericial products. Prior to nanotechnology, atoms were left as they were and customizing in the nano field did not exist. The subject of nanotechnology greatly relates to chemistry's atomic structure.
One example of nanotechnology is the creation of carbon nanotubes.
