Kijana + the buffaloes

Kijana in Kiswahili means something like a 'lad' (as far as I remember). This was a young male lion that the BCD team was filming and on this photo is perched up a tree.

He went up there beacause the buffaloes weren't particularly friendly with him.

Some of them even charged towards Kijana.

Buffaloes don't really like lions, it seems. Since the lions sometimes would hunt buffaloes, the buffaloes would always try and chase away any lions that come too close to their herds.

Some additional shots of buffaloes were needed for the programme. Here, Gavin Thurston (of the Lion team) is filming a herd from the safety of a vehicle.

Massive grazers in action.   Buffs
More buffs   More ruminants on the plains.

The big tree some time after Kijana, the lion and the buffaloes that made him go up the tree, left the area.
