Brazil took the seventh spot at the 2002 Women's World Championship after a straight sets victory over Bulgaria. The South American Champion was simply better than the Bulgarians, who can be proud finishing in the Elite Eight of this event.
In the first set, Brazil was just a little bit better than Bulgaria. Some nice quick South American attacks put the bronze medallist of the 2001 European Championship immediately under pressure. Although Bulgaria came back at the end thanks some attacks of star player Antonia Zetova, Brazil won the first set without any problems (25-22).
Brazil also took off quickly in the second set. The South American Champion won many rallies and took a big lead (20-10). Brazil gallery played to the end of the set and allowed Bulgaria to make some more points (25-22).
In the third set, the gap Brazil made at the beginning was enough to clinch the set. Like in the previous sets, the comeback of Bulgaria started too late. Although the European squad made some nice block points, the Brazilians survived and clinched the 3-0 victory by taking the set 25-21. The quick attack of Valeska Menezes was the last point of the World Championship for the Brazilian team.
Bulgarian Antonia Zetova was the best scorer of the match with 19 points. On the Brazilian side,
Luciana Nascimento was the best player with 14 points.

Team captain Vania Sokolova (BUL): Brazil deserved this victory. This should not be an apology, but we were tired after the many matches. We lacked concentration and thats why we lost.

Team captain Karin Rodrigues (BRA): We are very happy with this result, because we played very well today. We had the strong Bulgarian attackers, for instance Vania Sokolova, under control with our block.

Head coach Stefan Panchev (BUL): Two things, one positive, one negative. The positive point is that we played against a very good Brazilian team and we dont have such an opportunity often. The negative point is that we lost. My players are obviously very tired and didnt have a good day. I would like to thank the organisers in all cities and the spectators for their fantastic support. I wish the German candidature for the 2012 Olympic Games good luck.

Head coach Marco Motta (BRA): We played very well today, because my players desperately wanted to conclude this tournament with a good performance. Our tactics worked very well. We are happy with seventh place because we had a lot of problems before and during the World Championship and many injuries. The team is very young and was formed only three months ago.
