The
Second Meeting of TdH Regional Partners’ Working
Group on Biodiversity.
This
meeting was a yearly event calendar of Terre des
Hommes Germany Southeast Asia Coordination Office,
Bangkok. This event was carried out by the Association
for Community and Ecology Development (ACED)
which is being an environmental division of TdH
Bangkok.
This
meeting discussed Biodiversity and some related
issues such as environmental damaged as a result
of woods exploitation, development projects, and
the conversion of forest became monocrop
plantations. The topics were around illegal
logging for industries purpose, dam project to
support hydroelectric power plant, genetic
engineering, and bio piracy as the most popular
issues in the meeting session. These issues are
considered to be the most serious threat for the
biodiversity continuation cycle.
Fifteen
attendees from seven countries in Southeast Asia
were participated in the meeting, included
Indonesia which was represented by Ms. Evi Naria
MPH., of LSPL.
The
result of the Second Meeting of TdH Regional
Partners’ Working Group was poured in
Declaration for Biodiversity.
Creating an electronic mail out on
biodiversity issues to be circulated among
partners monthly under the direction of the
Association for Community and Ecology
Development. Each partner has agreed to
submit at least twenty lines of text each
month.
Following through with Training of
Trainers (ToT) as proposed at the first
meeting of this group. Francis Morales of
MASIPAG has committed to train a traveling
group of trainers who will visit partner
countries and conduct training sessions on
Biodiversity.
Researching traditional methods of
restoration and development of biodiversity
to be presented to partners at the next
meeting of the group. Partners have
committed to prepare at least twenty pages
of text and Jaturong Boonyaratanasoontorn
has agreed to act as an advisor.
Meeting formally in North Sumatra,
Indonesia from October 22nd-28th,
2002. Evi Naria will organize the meeting,
Nuttarote Wangwinyoo will act as the
convenor, and Terre des Hommes has committed
to sponsor one key partner from each
participating Southeast Asian countries.
The
declaration has been supported by seventeen
representatives from Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia,
Thailand, Burma, the Philippines, and Laos.
The
meeting on biodiversity was ended on November 7th,
2001 and then continued with a short exposure
visit in some villages, Mae Khong river basin,
Mirror Art Group which focuses on the under
schooling child – provides them an alternative
education – and the victims drugs/psychotropic
matter and assisting for indigenous people of Akha.
