| Little ladies and lords: Garb for children Once children were toilet trained, they were dressed as small adults.but whats the point of a costume if you cant have fun in it? The best idea is either to use a smaller version of the T-tunic pattern or to use one of the Halloween patterns. Boys The easiest way to get a small boy in garb is to just put a tabard or cape over their clothes. Older children who may want more (or if you enjoy costuming your little conglomeration of snips 'n snails 'n puppydogs' tails) can be clothed using sized-down versions of the men's garb. Girls Easiest Use a long sleeve shirt and a long skirt with the bodice below: Girls Bodice 1. Cut a strip 6 inches wide from the side of the material. 2. Fold the long sides of this strip together. (The outside of the material is to the center.) Sew along this edge. Pin a safety pin to one end of the strip and pull it all the way through the middle of strip. This should turn the strip so the outside of the material is facing out. Press flat. 3. Measure from the girls waist to her armpit and add 2 inches. Measure around her waist and add 2 inches. Cut the cloth to this size. 4. Hem the edges. 5. Put a lacing down the center front (each end of the cloth). 6. Position the strip from steps 1 and 2 over the shoulder, pin into place, cut off the extra and sew into place. Repeat with the other shoulder. Again, sized-down versions of the women's garb can be used for little girls, though it will mean much more work. If you want more than the simple garb suggested above, your best bet is to find a nice, semi-period looking (i.e. stay away from fairy tale stuff) Halloween costume pattern.
