Teen dies in crash on way to church

A teenager on his way to Sunday morning church services was killed after his car struck a tree on Biscayne Boulevard, friends said.

The victim was identified as Sam Silvestri, who was in his late teens.

Silvestri was scheduled to perform in an Easter program Sunday night, said Vivien Marks, who is also a member of A Place Called Hope, at 750 Ives Dairy Rd.

He was to play the role of Malachi, a Jewish construction company owner who builds synagogues and youth centers, said Carol Brownlee, an assistant to the church's bishop.

The 8:30 a.m. crash occurred on the boulevard at Northeast 192nd Street in Aventura, police said.

Hours later, Silvestri's stepfather told parishioners that a truck allegedly drove into Silvestri's lane. He tried to avoid hitting it by swerving to the side and hit the tree.

Police confirmed there had been a fatal accident but did not release details on Sunday.

''Sam was a very loving young man. His greatest dream was to lead people to the Lord,'' Brownlee said.
