FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is an exciting international robotics program designed to inspire students and encourage them to pursue careers in science, engineering and technology. It is comprised of the FIRST Robotics Competition, FIRST LEGO League, FIRST Tech Challenge, and FIRST Place. The non-profit program was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway, the AutoSyringe, iBOT Mobility System and many other medical advancement devices.

Gracious professionalism is the moral value behind FIRST and teaches ethics to the leaders of tomorrow. The concept behind gracious professionalism is treating people with respect, being friendly, and having an overall positive attitude. Students and adults are encouraged to lend a helping hand to teams in need, without expecting anything in return. The overall goal of gracious professionalism is to educate others that, while there may be opponents in FIRST, there are no enemies.
