I. About the Site
Site began May 28, 2000, developed using Netscape Composer, FTP Voyager, MS Excel/FrontPage/NotePad/Word, and multiple image editors. EngineeRunner originated from being obviously an engineer and having high respect or regard to films (i.e. Blade Runner + Logan's Run) and video games (i.e. Metroid + Lode Runner). Symbolically, an EngineeRunner runs around the web in quest of interesting favorable material and studying that material in depth like an engineer would do to a problem... sort of a guru or connoisseur. For those who don't know, an engineer, as a noun, is one skilled in some branch of engineering or one who operates/supervises the operation of engines or technical equipment. An engineer, as a transitive verb, is to plan, construct, etc. or to manage skillfully (Webster's New World Dictionary). As for now, the temporarily personalized EngineeRunner site emphasizes on the best of science fiction (SCIFI) fantasy art; cult classic film, anime and video game emulation; and rare 80's synthpop - retro - new wave MP3 music. Site includes ViewPoints on Life and some university papers/projects. What's the purpose (mission)? A side project or hobby as to give and receive data on these subjects for archiving and learning. What's in the near future? Hopefully, to attain a web domain with members, purchase items, and an on-line music radio station.

What's Civil and Architectural Engineering? These fields of engineering concentrate on reinforced + prestressed concrete design, structural analysis, steel structure design, fluid mechanics, mechanical design, construction management, engineering ethics + economics. In particular, civil engineers specialize in design, construction + operation of facilities that are essential to modern life. These include: buildings, airports, highways, bridges, dams, tunnels, irrigation + water supply systems, municipal wastewater treatment plants, stormwater drainage systems, site remediation + pollution prevention systems. In contrast, architectural engineers specialize in planning, design + construction of buildings. Emphasis in architectural curriculum includes: design of structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, acoustical + illumination systems; development of materials + construction methods; building construction management; and integration of building components. Architectural engineering differs from architecture for architects concentrate on building aesthetics, functional layout, site location + orientation. - from a Univ. of Miami: Dept. of Civil, Architectural, and Environmental Engineering pamphlet

2002-12-07 Something to look forward to every day. Just read this article... "An Eyeful a Day Keeps the Doctor Away" by Jonathan Hayter - Staring at women's breasts is good foor men's health and makes them live longer, a new survey reveals. Researchers have discovered that a 10-minute ogle at women's breasts is as healthy as a half-hour [workout] in the gym. A five year study of 200 men found that those who enjoyed a longing look at busty beauties had lower blood pressure, less heart disease and slower pulse rates compared to those who did not get their daily eyeful. Dr. Karen Weatherby, who carried out the German study, wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine: "Just 10-minutes of staring at the charms of a well endowed female is roughly equivalent to a 30-minute aerobics workout. Sexual excitement gets the heart pumping and improves blood circulation. There is no question that gazing at breasts makes men healthier. Our study indicates that engaging in this activity a few minutes daily cuts the risk of a stroke and heart attack in half. We believe that by doing so consistently, the average man can extend his life four to five years."
2002-09-05 A good television program "Ecological Design: Inventing the Future" came on. It's about some architects develop areas for human needs while managing to preserve the environment. Buckminster Fuller is documented. He brought about the idea of getting more out of less. Curitiba, Brazil is documented as an ecological city for the near future. Go to the Design Outlaws site for more information.
2002-03-29 Last night went to a restaurant/nightclub called the Kiss Steakhouse located on Miami Beach (South Beach, SoBe) that had a private party believe named James Bond: Kiss of the Spider-Woman featuring memorabilia, film clips, Swatch watches and "Pussy Galore" humor from Beavis and Butthead sound-byte quips. What luck to be invited as a friend of a friend knew one of the waitresses dressed in white nurse uniforms. Skimpy bikini dancers were body-painted in gold glitter with the walls painted in a red hot lipstick color to set the mood. Drinks were free as a trio of us had roughly four shots of pure Vodka and three mixed drinks of Cranberry-Vodka. After the drinks made an effect, there were no worries... maybe the most wasted person there... slept it off for about six hours in the car, then a bad hangover, stomach-ache, and the occasional spew to clean out the system; a learning experience of not what to do the next time. One funny moment was when I noticed a woman with man-hands. It cracked my group up since there was an Seinfeld episode on that subject.

IV. ViewPoints on Life: Parts of a Greater Hole
Archive of short writings/rants/views/opinions addressing issues involving our sins (envy, gluttony, greed, lust, pride, sloth and wrath) with entertainment, 'pop culture,' consumerism, monopolization, commercialism, materialism and science technology. Hopefully, reading this section will enlighten you in thinking, and being aware, about the "world we live in and life in general."1 Comments or questions are appreciated by e-mail.

Part 7: Society Flaw 2002-05-11
The society of the United States of America (Americana) is the wave of the future and is a benchmark for other developing countries. Why is that so? It's because the U.S. has taken all the other countries ideas and natural resources to create a super power no one can resist. Oil from the Middle East, labor from Mexico and China, and forested wood from Brazil are just examples. The U.S. is a monopoly entity growing like a child and is the gateway to luxury, which may be bad in the long run.
Americana is all about entertainment, self-indulgence, money and power. Television plays a huge role in advertising these subject matters. The images and small catchy phrases ("Just Do It" by NIKE) are easily memorized to those who see "America the beautiful." This is because they are fixated on becoming part of Americana. Television is the medium people have chosen to keep themselves in touch with the majority. It's a free brainwashing tool that only requires at the bare minimum electricity. The ones hooked get the special packages like cable or a satellite dish supplying more channels. Okay now, stop please, what's the point? Most of Americans have become lazy in their activity at their job, in exercising and self-awareness of health, or at creating a family. Maybe it's because they are spending too much time in front the tube or maybe certain things have become easily attainable like food, items and tasks. For example, if hunger strikes, go to a fast food joint. If you need EX-LAX, hit any local store. If you need a high, go get VIAGRA, a beer, smoke, drugs or prostitute around the corner. So, we are busy at self-indulging ourselves with so much ease that we don't want to work hard at the important things in life. We complain, argue and then sinfully entertain ourselves to soothe the soul. What has resulted is a society with a rich porn and drug industry, steroid users, facial and body cosmetic surgery, workaholics and high count in obesity. Acres of land are wasted for golf courses. Air-conditioning, with its CFC side effect, has become a fact of life in this ever so hotter climate. In short, Americana is sucking the resources out of Mother Earth and slowly destroying human progression, so it needs to be altered in some major fashion. And, TV is a waste of brain cells if you didn't know.

Part 6: Demand of Quality 2002-02-15
When a company becomes big and dominants their fields, they sit back and relax. What's the point to be made here? While in their lazy phase, the service or products are at a standstill; there is no progression because of any competition. This is the start of their downfall as they are at their peak. Is there a word expressing this concept? Small parts of society, including myself, criticize them for not working for what they earned. We criticize on the performance or quality of the service or product, criticizing to the point of not even using the goods the company has to offer. Are we jealous? We should be. Again, getting paid without putting out quality goods can push buttons in people. And as for the consumers who buy because of the companies overwhelming power over them, these consumers are just plain ignorant and don't care where their (or somebody else's) money goes into. This doesn't just happen to companies, it happens to celebrities, music artists or groups, sports, et cetera. Let's just say the whole business and entertainment industry for that matter. The majority of young adults and teenagers are examples of consumers with no clue. Most of the business and entertainment industry target young adults and teenagers because of their inexperience and their sense of exploration. Young adults and teenagers don't care because the money is from the guardian or parents. They didn't earn the money. It's like toilet paper to some! Young adults and teenagers are the ones that keep pop music and rap alive. What needs to be done? The parent needs to teach kids to spend money wisely. Then, the quality of the business and entertainment industry will rise.
Let's say we pick on Microsoft, AOL and Wal-Mart again. From 'Microsoft Windows 3.1' through XP, there's no difference between them except maybe the ease of finding things. Have we seen any new programs in the software? They still have the same Paint Brush, Notepad, Solitaire, et cetera. Oh, wow, they changed the name to Paint. Are you saying 'Windows Explorer' is new? It's just the same as 'File Manager.' The only good thing is long name ability to files. We don't need it, but it makes things easier. Hell, we could still function with DOS. AOL is the same thing as for ease of functions. The software is for people that do not know how to use a computer, the elder and young. Can somebody please tell AOL to stop sending us those free trial offer CD's in the mail? It should be a crime. People trash the CD's. Back then; reformatting the 3.5" floppy disks for storing files was a way of not trashing it. Now, you can't use the CD's for anything. At least make the discs rewriteable. AOL mails to probably every U.S. household. As a result, most are in the landfill. Wal-Mart is another service unliked. Most of their consumers are low-lifes buying low quality cheap goods. The sight of televisions giving news about company issues and the aisles of anything involved with home life felt like being assimilated in a way. If you watched 'Star Trek: Next Generation,' then assimilation with the Borg is familiar. Wal-Mart is using any means possible like AOL to lure people in. What is there to say? The consumers are the ones to blame for letting these entities survive. "Ignorance is bliss" as some say.

Part 5: Why Do We Covet? 2002-01-27
To covet is to want ardently or passionately (something that another person has). This is a word symbolized in the film Silence of the Lambs, a gruesome cult classic about a FBI agent Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) sent to interview imprisoned killer Dr. Hannibal 'the Cannibal' Lecter (Anthony Hopkins). She hopes he might reveal information about another crazed killer known only as 'Buffalo Bill,' who is abducting young large women, starving them, and then killing them for their hide. The beautiful Starling intrigues Lecter’s brilliant mind, and he begins giving her mystifying clues, which could be helpful, or merely a game. One mystifying clue Cannibal gives is that Buffalo Bill covets. "And what do people covet, Clarice?" They begin to covet the things that are closest to them or covet from everything they see. Cannibal exchanges these clues to know the secrets of Starling's childhood life. We learn that her father died when she was 10. She became orphaned, and then adopted by a herdsman of sheep and horses. She tries to run away with a baby lamb when hearing the cries of the sheep, and seeing that they were to be slaughtered. Cannibal relates Buffalo Bill with Starling's past life. Buffalo Bill kills because he covets to be feminine. Starling is an agent because she covets to stop the cries of the lambs. Symbolically meaning that she desires to end every human indecency. Cannibal says to Starling: "… when will the cries of the lambs end, Clarice." She doesn't know. This is when the title Silence of the Lambs comes to perspective.
Covetousness relates to every single person out in the world. We all covet by everything we see in life. Television with its superstars in entertainment, sports and politics make a huge impact in the eyes of young children and teens. Some go to far like what Buffalo Bill did, which is scarce. Some go in the right direction like Starling. What about the people who have cosmetic surgery and the surgeons performing the operations? And, what about the use of growth hormone and steroids? Does this have any way of helping the world? Surgery helps if a person is disfigured for example. Steroids will help if the person is crippled from an accident and needs strength. But if a normal person does surgery or steroids and hides the fact, then that person is not helping himself or herself or the world in the eyes of good. And, the surgeons and salesmen involved are there to make a profit. These people are selfish and greedy, intending to covet. We live in a world of sin. The world of sports, entertainment and politics has taken over the natural world and slowly erasing it from our minds. Let's not get to depressed because there are those rare gems that can make a good influence on society. Can you find those hard to find rare gems? Or, do you give up so easily?

Part 4: Road Rage Up Your Alley 2001-12-31
What do drivers get angry about when venturing on the roadway? All those who commute, from point A to B, have had a little 'road rage' in their system. Signs of contracting 'road rage' are: traffic congestion or accidents; inhalation of exhaust fumes; tailgating habits; stop and go traffic; and the summer heat wave. Are there any missing? Oh, a good one for all you folks - sight of a slow cell-phone driver. What needs to be done to leviate this anger? More roads you ask. A lower speed limit. City developers have added these roads. But does that solve the problem. Will adding more roads help in the long run? Will it help the environment? If your intelligent enough, you already know the answer. Having studied transportation engineering for a semester, roads have not helped. If you looked at the historic past, there has been an increase in manufacturers of vehicles and the things that go along with it like gas stations. Yes, this is a sign of a booming economy. A sign of power. A place to migrate to. A place to see and enjoy. A place to get an education. A place where dreams come true. A place of envy and greed. The envy of immigrants. And, the greed of the oil makers and car manufacturers who want you to buy a car and use it as much as possible! Then, 5 years later another is bought and used. An endless cycle of consumerism. What should be done? Make vehicles long lasting, more efficient and environmental friendly. But that is not the way of making a buck to most individuals. They want products to linger as long as the money is coming in. When the money stops to a drizzle, they build an updated version of their product. A update not to advanced or ground breaking, but something to get your taste buds going. Not to just motor vehicles, but to any consumer product out their. Though, the most damage to the environment are motor vehicles and its side effects: roads, oil, gasoline and pollution. In conclusion, road rage is a result of envy + greed. Curing it may be an impossible, but it can be done.

Part 3: Pop Culture Ego-Trip 2001-08-22
Our society, especially in the US, has a huge ego problem. The motto "bigger and faster is better" is one term used in representation. For example, women surgically enlarge certain body parts and men use growth hormones, like steroids, for muscular mass. Why? They think of boosting their ego over others or being accepted to a crowd, which is usually by an inferiority complex. In actuality, they make themselves look foolish or feeble-minded. And, our society accepts it. This acceptance becomes engraved into 'pop culture' which is then engraved into the weak-minded who jump on the so-called 'band-wagon.' As is seen in the way celebrities persuade self-conscious teenagers. All these unnatural cosmetic methods of enhancing ones body will only shorten your life span. Do it right, naturally, by fitness training + nutrition. Another example is these huge companies like America On-Line (AOL) and Wal-Mart that are getting bigger and faster everyday. AOL started out as an internet service provider (ISP), but then the company is now integrating their product with everyday life. They joined with other companies like Turner/Time Warner to get their name on CNN for that reason; to get television viewers to see their product. As for Wal-Mart, this company combined a drug and food store, Home Depot, and K-Mart. AOL and Wal-Mart are monopolizing like Microsoft. Soon, our society will have to depend on these 'power-houses' to get through life. Is that a scary thought or what? Every couple of years, Microsoft comes out with a newer version of Windows. Well, everyone has to buy it or programs won't work like video games and other software. Every computer in the intercontinental U.S. has Windows. No wonder Bill Gates is the richest entrepreneur in the world. Maybe that is why computer viruses pop up because the people who made these viruses are pissed off at the every so often software upgrade. Why you ask? All these companies/clans want to do is overpower their opponents + be the most dominant entity in the world. It's all about boosting egos over others. And again, they get ideas from 'pop culture' that says it's OK to self-mutilate ourselves and to have endless greed. Everyone can't stop being a little greedy, but they can stop from having too much. What's the point here? Boosting ones ego are brought about in different ways as seen above. It's kind of like an addiction to a drug. It feels good at the moment, but as time progresses the negative effects start kicking in. Furthermore, this addiction can be stopped by not jumping on the 'band-wagon' of this 'pop culture.'

Part 2: Blade Runner and Human Cloning 2001-07-30
Stem cell research is an important issue in our society. The cloning of sheep has been successful. Which means if a sheep can be cloned, why not a human. Is the government going to help fund the research of human cloning? Why did the genetic scientists choose a sheep to be the first cloned creature? Were they influenced by the novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (DADoES), by Philip K. Dick in selecting the sheep as the first candidate? It's a good guess. When the film 'Blade Runner' was released back in the early 80's, no one would of thought replicants (clones) - a.k.a. 'skin-jobs' - could possibly be realistic. Well, we are not far away from seeing images from 'Blade Runner' coming to life. We are close to having an 'Off-world' colony. Is it going to be Mars or the Moon? An over-populated society, pollution and rainy days are a realistic future. The last thing we need are the spinners zooming over our heads. Philip Dick is brilliant to have thought up a story which would truly come to be a not so far distant future for our society.

Part 1: ChildBirth Rate 2001-07-21
In one sentence, the world is in excess. That is because there is an overpopulation of people, which means more production and consumption... vehicles, food, entertainment and items. Maybe this is why the world has weather fluctuations, 'Mad Cow' disease, divorces, obesity, crappie movies and music, and so on. What's the solution? Something to wake us up and start thinking more about the survival of the human species. Having another war is a possibility or an uncontrolled natural disaster big enough to wipe out a chunk of the population. Another possibility is a cutback on childbirth, which is what China is doing. But they are controlled by the government and the rest of the world is not. This is the only peaceful way of solving the problem. So many families in all countries are having babies and they cannot even support themselves or their offspring. Why do they reproduce? Reproduction is a fact of life. All life - humans, animals, vegetation, etc. - is programmed to survive by passing on DNA. The U.S. government, who we vote for and pay taxes to, help by giving food and shelter. Our culture says this is humane. Well, what is so humane about deforestation and slaughter factories. Most say... well that's different. Well, others don't think so. We should create laws to limit the amount of human reproduction of families to stop the hassle of helping the foolish (ex: welfare) and start concentrating more on saving rain forests and cleaning the environment by technological advancement and recycling.
