What is a Puppymill? What is a Puppymill... A puppymill is a commercial kennel that supplies puppies to pet stores on a huge scale. These kennels keep dogs much like chickens at an egg farm. The dogs are never allowed out of their small wire cages. They rarely see a human. Their only value is in how many puppies they can produce. The wire that they spend their lives on cuts their feet. They're given the cheapest food available if they are given food at all. Water, if they have it, comes from a hamster water bottle so the dogs might get a drink, but never enough to wet their mouths. Puppies are boxed up and shipped out as soon as possible all in the name of profit. They do not get adequet veterinary care. They are frostbitten in the winter, and swelter in the summer. These dogs live a life worse than death - they are cold and hungry, diseased and hurt. They watch their children die or be taken away too soon. They watch their mothers die. They see nothing but suffering. As long as they can produce puppies they're kept in that hell. As soon as they can no longer produce they are killed and replaced by one of their offspring who will suffer the same fate. If you really want to help these dogs, don't ever buy a dog from a petshop. Adopt one instead from your local shelter or from a breed rescue organization. If you want a purebred dog, do a lot of research and buy from a reputable breeder. Reputable breeders will guarantee the dogs' health and will say that if you ever can't keep the dog, you can return it at any point in it's life. The other way to help is pretty simple. Educate everyone you know about this immoral and illegal practice. Urge your friends and neighbors to adopt rather than buy a puppy from a petshop. The only way to stop puppymills is to take the market away from them. You can find puppymill dogs in your local paper. If you look closley, you'll find that some people are listing lots of different breeds of dogs but have the same phone number. There are also puppy brokers who will swear that their puppies come from a network of "reputable breeders" - this is a lie. No reputable breeder would ever willingly hand a puppy over to a broker. Not one - not ever. The final thing you can do to help, is to preach to every dog owner you know - SPAY AND NEUTER - ...as soon as possible. |
