SURGERY
In certain circumstances, some emphysema sufferers may
benefit from "Lung Volume Reduction Surgery". But as this is major surgery, a certain criteria must be met before the patient will be considered.
The criteria for LVRS
With LVRS, providing the diseased area is at the top of the lungs, this area can be removed, leaving more space for the remaining area to inflate, allowing more oxygen to be drawn into the lungs. While this doesn't cure the disease, it does make breathing a lot easier. Before being considered, the patient must be a non-smoker, or have given up smoking. He/she must also be fit enough to walk, however slowly, for 30 minutes without stopping. When I arrived at Glenfield Hospital for my surgery, I could barely do one lap of the ward before needing a rest. But with the help of the wonderful Dr Sally Singh, and several sessions in the gym, and walks round the hospital, I managed to achieve the target after two weeks. Then after the operation, I had to go through the whole procedure again. But it was all worth it to find that I could get out and about again.
