Safety Precautions

There are certain things to avoid if you have birds inside your home.  One the biggest unseen dangers is overheated Teflon or any non-stick cookware.  This coating will emit toxic fumes if overheated and will kill birds quickly and silently.  Heavily scented candles or oils, perfumes and chemicals have similar dangers as well.  Be sure to exercise caution inside your home with cleaning chemicals and sprays.

Your handfed lovebird has clipped wings for his safety.  Lovebirds are very inquisitive and will check out anything that looks interesting.  Think of your bird as a two year old that needs to be protected from household dangers.  Having his wings clipped is easy protection.  If he is allowed to fly, he will take the opportunity to explore beyond your patience and find hidden dangers like tall glasses filled with water, open toilets, hot cooking elements in the kitchen, a window he thought was open, or he simply may find his way outdoors.  You will notice as he molts he will lose a feather on one wing, and then perhaps the other wing.  As these flight feathers grow out, you may want to employ someone experienced to teach you how to trim them individually, (after each grows out) rather than wait until he is fully able to fly to have him trimmed.  Clipping their flight feathers is not painful and will go a long way in ensuring the safety of your pet lovebird.
