Lovebird Diet

Your lovebird should be offered a diet of pellets, fresh foods and treats of millet and seed.

Provide a variety of foods including vegetables, beans, pasta, scrambled eggs,  whole wheat bread or pumpkin birdie bread.  They enjoy grains like quinoa, brown rice, barley and wheat berries. Sprouting is a very easy way to provide an exceptionally healthy addition to their diet, and its inexpensive too.   You can add sesame seeds, dandelion and alfalfa leaf, wheatgrass, spirulina  and sprinkle a bit of lactobaccilus on top. (China Prairie  Fresh Additions is an excellent alternative!)   Rotate between different foods for variety during the week.  During the day they feast on pellets, which they reduce to dust!   The birds do exceptionally well on this diet and it keeps them at a good weight, healthy and produces nice babies.

If you choose an alternative diet, please remember it takes time to transition to other pellets.  They will most likely eat seed, but may not accept another pellet in the place of what they are currently used to eating. Lovebirds appear to enjoy vegetables, mine are not big fruit eaters, with the exception of apples. Remember, changing environments is a stressful period for any bird.  Make sure he is eating well, (check the droppings to be sure), and provide extra treats and millet.
