Forthcoming in September 2003, Lough Views: A Children's Anthology of Poetry, Art and Drama, edited by Adrian Rice. This year's book will include, as usual, poems, images and scripted poems but will also include photographs of children and artists at work and original plays. Since Belfast City pulled funding from the project, other schools were included from North Down, Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus. This year we are proud to include integrated schools. Schools involved: P6 classes from Towerview PS, St. Malachy's PS, Bangor Central Integrated PS, Whitehouse PS, St. James' PS, Glengormley Integrated PS, Carrickfergus Central PS, St. Nicholas PS, and Acorn Integrated PS.
Normally, hundreds of children are inspired each year by this project. However, this year the project managed to reach thousands of children. This expansion was due to Molly Freeman and Adrian Rices production of a teacher's manual - Exploring the Lough: Creative Activities for the Primary School Classroom. The booklet includes lesson plans, games, activities and exercises in art, drama, music, poetry, creative writing, nature, and environmental awareness. The booklet was handed out to all teachers in each school to encourage all the children in the school to write a poem about the Lough. Through this competition, one extra childs poem from each school will be included in Lough Views.
Funding being notoriously fickle, this may be the last year of this project: hopefully not.
All of the books published to date are beautifully produced by Nicholson & Bass, Ireland's leading printer. Lough Views will be launched in September when all the children involved will receive a free copy. |
