South Riding
South Riding is located on Route 50 in Southeast Loudoun County.
There are two basic type of light fixtures being used in this neighborhood.
The primary source of light is the globe or "acorn" fixture. This fixture is an extremely poor choice for roadway and area lighting because it has no cut-off control. It exibits the worst light pollution traits: High glare, execessive light trespass, and loses at least half of its light to the sky where it is totally wasted and is a large contributor to sky glow.
The other source of light is a semi-cutoff fixture used in the shopping center near the center of the community. This fixture does not cast much of its light into the sky, but the high intensity lamp protrudes into the slight sag in the lense and creates an irritating amount of glare.
I did not see any full cut-off fixtures installed at South Riding.
