LOTUS Sangam, Kumbakonam (A semi urban area of Tamil Nadu, India)

Lotus Sangam was formed in 2000 by a group of self-identified Kothis (effeminate men) to support the needs of Kothis in Kumbakonam (A semi urban area of Tamil Nadu, India) and its surrounding villages. Lotus is unique because we are entirely community owned and managed, and are one of the few groups working with Kothis in rural and semi-urban spaces. Our work has focused on reducing Kothis -related stigma and discrimination and its negative consequences including self-discrimination, runaways, and reducing HIV transmission. We work with approximately 1500 self-identified Kothis in our and neighborhood districts and conduct monthly meetings, counseling, and advocacy. We have collaborated with local municipalities, the state government and other NGOs. Our holistic approach recognizes that Kothis are much more than mere sexual beings, and thus supports the community in multiple ways affirming its vibrancy and capability
