STORY

STORY The series opens to Honda Tohru, a 16 year old orphan and high school student at Kaibara High. Her father became very ill and died when she was little, and her mother, Honda Kyouko, only passed away a little while ago thanks to a car accident. Tohru is supposed to be living with her grandfather and some relatives, but his home is undergoing so renovations. Tohru promises to stay with one of her friends during the time her grandfather is renovating the house. However, she doesn't want to be a burden on her friends Hanajima Saki, who already has alot of people living in her home, and Uotani Arisa, who lives with her father in a small apartment. So, while Tohru's friends think she's living with her grandfather, and her grandfather thinks she living with her friends, just where IS Tohru? Not wanting to burden anyone, Tohru has pitched a tent in a forest near a stream...and that's where she's living!

Well, on her way to school one day in the forest, she spots a house. She goes down to check it out, where she sees little figures of the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac. This is where she meets Souma Shigure. The two talk for a little bit, and then Tohru's very popular classmate, Souma Yuki, shows up. Tohru is asked why she's stopped by. She answers that she lives nearby, and Yuki and Shigure are confused.

Tohru goes to school and chats with her friends, but not before we meet The Prince Yuki Fanclub, which is basically a huge group in the school of almost all the female students and some of the male ones. We only see a few, though, and they are very, very frightening.

Tohru goes back to her tent after school, and, at about the same time, Shigure and Yuki are walking down the path in the forest near their home. Then, they come across Tohru's tent...oops! They take Tohru home and ask her what's up, and she explains her situation. While they were all talking, a landslide happens and burries Tohru's tent! Tohru tries to dig her mother's precious photograph out of the pile of rubble, but Yuki holds her back, because she seems to have a rather nasty fever. They take her home, lay he to sleep, and she tells them about how she feels guilty because the ONE TIME she forgot to say "Have a Nice Day" and "Good Luck" to her mother, was the very day her mother died. Tohru is honoring her mother's memory by finishing High School, which is something her mother had never gotten to do.

Tohru wakes up the next morning, and Yuki has gotten all of her things out of the wreckage of her tent, including the undamaged photo of her mother. Then, Shigure and Yuki tell her she should stay with them, that way she will have a house to stay in and they will have someone to cook and clean for them. She accepts and all is well.

Then...a boy crashes through the ceiling of the Souma house! Yikes! He is yelling at Yuki and the two are about to fight, when Tohru tackles the mysterious boy to hold him back. POOF! Suddenly, Tohru is holding not a boy, but and orange cat in her arms! She promptly freaks out, and in the process, she bumps into both Yuki and Shigure, who turn into a rat and dog respectively! This does not help with Tohru's freaking out. Eventually, Yuki and Shigure, still in their animal forms, explain that this a part of a curse on their family, and that the cat boy is Souma Kyou.

Tohru is a cat-fan, because her mother always told her the story of the Juunishi and the cat when she was little. Tiny Tohru always felt bad for the cat in the story, and decised that she should be a cat! Tohru wants to try and be good friends with Kyou. Then...POOM! Yuki, Kyou, and Shigure turn back into their human forms, totally naked by the way. Tohru blushes and spazes out again, but really, all is well.

Shigure mentions something about having to notify Souma Akito, Head of the Souma family, about this. Yuki glares at Shigure, and later at school, Yuki tells Tohru that they might have to erase her memory. She smiles and says "Ok, but will you please become friends with me again after that?" Tohru fixes Yuki's tie, and all is well, right?

While Tohru and Yuki are at school, Shigure is meeting with Akito. Akito says that it's fine if Tohru stays with them and that it might prove interesting. Yuki and Tohru go home and are told the happy news that Tohru can stay, memory intact. Kyou is enrolled into Kaibara High and all really IS well! This is, of course, just a summary of the first two of so episodes, and you should definately see this series for yourself! (DUH)

SUMMARY

Fruits Basket really isn't about the story, though. While the story is certainly interesting, it seems Fruits Basket is really more about the characters, their situations, and people finding the place where they belong. :)
