IMHO, the best part of Fruits Basket is the amazing and complex characters! Learn about them! Although this secton isn't completely done yet! It will be sometime, I promise. >_<;; These bios are based mostly on the anime, but I might throw in some elements from the manga as well.

TOHRU HONDA

Comments: Tohru is one of my favorite female characters EVER, next to Haruko from FLCL. She's cute and kind, and so simple that it's sweet. Just a clear blue sky makes her happy! :) She loves her mother Kyoko Honda very, very much! Tohru learned alot from her mom, and passes alot of her knowledge along to others. She also thinks of things on her own, and if Tohru ever has a child, her child would probably idolize HER! All by herself, Tohru has given a bit of hope to almost all of the Juunishi! (I don't really know about Rin and Kureno.) Tohru is always kind and cheerful, and always tries to understand others. Despite how wonderful Tohru is, however, she harbors a bit of depression. When she was little, she used to play a game called Fruits Basket. The kids would all sit down, and someone would name them after different fruits, like lemon, watermelon, apple, etc. But, teasingly, they always called Tohru the "onigiri" (riceball). People called out the different fruits, but no one ever called "onigiri". So Tohru would just sit there, happily waiting this fun game go on in front of her, waiting to be called. But, no one ever called on her. This seems to have followed her into young adulthood, because when she thinks she has to leave the Souma family, she makes a comparison back to the game, thinking, "An onigiri...does not belong in a Fruits Basket." Hence the name of the series.
YUKI SOUMA

Comments: He's not my FAVORITE character...but I have to admit that he's so cute when he goes chibi! ^^ He's very popular at his school, and there's even a fanclub st his high school that's just for people that like him! At school, he's known as Prince Yuki, which is why Arisa always calls him "Ouji" as a joke. :) Because of all this attention, some of the girls at his school become...scary in his presence. ^^; Others try to make him do things they think will make him even cuter! XD They made him wear a pretty dress in one episode. He's a very kind person, for the most part, and he's also a little shy sometimes. He absolutely do NOT like Kyou, and shows his darker side a bit when fighting him. Yuki always wins. ^^; Yuki also has an odd relationship with his brother, Ayame. He and his brother are almost total opposites, which is why they tend to not get along very well. Yuki seems to be terrified of Akito, and with good reason, I suppose, as Akito seemed to hurt Yuki alot when they were little. Yuki is still a very sweet person, and like I said...my favorite thing about him is how cute he is when he goes chibi! XD He seems to have something deeper going on inside of his emotions, though. I'm not sure what...o_0;; Oh, and Yuki is talented at sports and is very smart. :D
KYOU SOUMA

Comments: I like Kyou. :) *cough* Anyway, Kyou is the Cat of the Juunishi, although, being the Cat, he isn't actually part of the JUUNISHI. Because he's the Cat, he's cast out of the family. Even those who don't know about the Juunishi in his family seem to pick up the hateful habits from those who do. So no one seems to like Kyou. ;_; Most of the other Juunishi accept him. Yuki and Kyou dislike eachother, but I don't think it has anything to do with the Cat/Mouse thing. Kyou seems to instigate the majority of the fights with Yuki. But...Kyou always loses. XD Kyou's mother commited suicide and his father wants nothing to do with him! How sad! :( Kyou was adopted by a really nice Souma guy named Kazuma, who taught him, Yuki, Kagura, and Hatsuharu martial arts! Kyou calls Kazuma "Shishou." ^^ KYOU HATES LEEKS! XD He's also hiding something...

Comments: Kagura likes Kyou. ALOT. So much so that she often beats the crap out of him. XD As she puts it, she becomes "happy with all her might." It's almost like an obsession. And you've gotta admire her for liking someone that much, especially the Cat, who is thought of as a freak, even in the crazy Souma family. Kagura also seems to be friends with Shigure, as the two talk sometimes. We don't really see them talk ALOT, but I just kind of get that feeling. We don't honestly learn much about Kagura in the anime, but she honestly does seem to be very kindhearted. She works really hard to fix Shigure's house after she messed it up. Tohru even saw her still fixing the door late at night! And at the end of the anime, it's painfully obvious how much she cares about Kyou.
MOMIJI SOUMA

Comments: Ahhhhh! I love Momiji! And his little song! (I have the lyrics and translation to Momiji's song, Teru Teru Momiji, here.) Momiji looks and acts younger than he acctually is, and even Tohru thought he was very very young at first, too! ^^ Momiji is very happy and hyper and carefree. And he always has candy! :D And he wears the girls' school uniform! (With shorts, not the skirt. XD) He's part German, which I believe he gets from his mother. Ah, yes. Momiji's poor, insane mother. Well, not INSANE, really. Momiji and his mother is a sad, sad tale. Basically, Momiji's mother gave birth to Momiji, not knowing about the curse. Then, when she hugged him, he would turn into a bunny. Obviously, someone in the family, probably Akito or Hatori explained the curse to her. But she became very stressed and kind of had a breakdown, the poor lady. All this stress was making her very, very ill. So one day, Momiji's father pulled him aside when he was little and told him that they needed to make mommy better, so they would erase all her memories of ever having him. One particularly unhappy scene is where Hatori asks Momiji's mother if she's sure she wants to go through with forgetting him. He asks her if she will regret it, and she says that her only regret was ever giving birth to a monster like Momiji. The whole time, little Momiji is watching from the doorway. So her memories were eraed and she became better and is now living a normal, happy life with Momiji's little sister Momo, who also doesn't know Momiji is her brother. His mother KNOWS Momiji, kind of. But she thinks he's some other Souma's child. Despite all this, Momiji is happy he could help his mother get better so he happily watches his mother and sister, but from far away. It's very sad. ;_; I cried.
HATORI SOUMA

Comments: Hatori is the Souma family doctor, and alot of his job is taking care of Akito, the sickly head of the Souma family. Hatori also has another unique talent: He can erase people's memories. This is a very important talent because, in the case that an outsider finds out about the Souma's secret, the curse, he can alter their memories. However, this talent only seems to bring Hatori and others pain. You see, Hatori had a girlfriend, Kana. One day, Kana found out Hatori's secret, but she accepted him, and they both seemed very happy. They even decided to become engaged. However, when it came to telling Akito about their wishes, he became enraged, forbidding it. When Akito broke a vase, a piece flew into Hatori's eye, injuring it. (Hatori is now almost blind in that eye, and he grows his bangs over it.) Akito told Kana it was her fault, and she believed every word he said. She became depressed and ill like Momiji's mother had been; sick with grief. Finally, Akito convinced Hatori to erase Kana's memories of she and him, since those were the memories causing her pain. Realizing that Akito was right, that Kana could be freed from her pain if she simply forgot what caused the pain, Hatori did it. He erased Kana's memories. So, now, although Kana is freed from HER pain, Hatori is the one left with the suffering, and the memories of the love he and Kana once shared. *sniffle* How sad! We learn later in the anime from Ayame that Kana is getting married to someone else. Hatori's a good sport about it, saying he's just glad Kana is happy.
Note: The reason why Hatori turns into a seahorse when hugged instead of an actual dragon is a cultural thing. What we call a seaHORSE is more like a seaDRAGON in Asia. They are considered to be like baby dragons, thus, Hatori is a seahorse.
AKITO SOUMA

Comments: My favorite character! Okay. Akito. What can I say? Most people hate him; he doesn't have alot of fans for several reasons. Why? He's done many cruel things like: breaking up Kana and Hatori, having Yuki's friends' memories erased, and beating up Kisa and Rin. He also tortured Yuki alot as a child. We don't really know why, but Akito seems to really have this weird torture/obsession thing for Yuki going on. He also is the one who blinded Hatori's eye, but he did that by accident. (He got angry and hit the vase, and a peice flew in Hatori's eye. Akito even felt bad, and got angry at Kana, saying it was all her fault.) So...you might be wondering: Why the HELL would I like a character like Akito? Because he's really complex and interesting. And you can't really blame him for having a bad attitude. Akito is cursed, but not like a Juunishi. As the head of the Soumas, he will die very young, and is always very sickly. Basically, Akito was born already half in his grave, always ill, with tons of responsibility thrust on him. Plus, he's related to Ayame. That'd screw ANYONE up. Akito seems to hang out with Kureno alot and he is cared for by Hatori. Why don't know why Akito approves of Tohru at first, but it doesn't matter, because then he hates her! XD Changes his mind quickly, yes? When he first met her, he told her she was cute. Then he told Shigure that Tohru was dumb and "such a loser!"
Note: I just want to say, Wakaba Murasaki did an INCREDIBLE job as Akito's voice in the Japanese version. I may not speak Japanese, but I can tell good acting when I hear it. It must have been difficult doing the voice for such a varied character! Calm and quiet one moment, screaming and hitting people the next!
Note 2: Before anyone e-mails me...yes...I know Akito's secret that recently came out in oen of Japan's latest Furuba manga releases. But I figured that counts as a 'big spoiler', so people are just going to have to buy the volume themselves. ;)

You see, because of her strange hair color and shyness, the other girls at her school make fun of her and ignore her, and every time she tries to speak, they just giggle. It also doesn't help that Akito recently caused her some bodily harm, for no reason she can think of! Kisa's mother is a very nice lady, but like most parents of Juunishi, she seems very stressed out. But she loves Kisa very much and worries about her. After Tohru tries to explain to Kisa's mother how Kisa is feeling, Kisa absolutely loves Tohru! So Kisa follows Tohru around alot and eventually begins speaking again. Still, she is very softspoken and shy.
