Lost and  Found  -  A Couple of Interpretations by Fung Ho Yin

The Passion with Making Art

I had my first exhibition about twenty years ago just before I graduated from the Polytechnic. I was involved with some exhibitions in a sort of yearly scale, however, my passion towards making art, and exhibiting it dwindled until I did not feel like doing it at all.

For more than ten years, although I continued to snap images on and off, I did not participate, or, long for doing any exhibitions simply because I saw no point in doing it. I still liked to attend exhibitions and shows, but I did not get excited about producing art works myself. I simply lost the passion for it.

This numbness towards the making of art slowly got healed during the two years of staying in London where I was learning more about photography. And, it is only when I found my most comfortable technique and medium for expression again - Gum Bichromate Printing, that I started to enjoy and even long for exhibition opportunities.

Lost Amidst the Mass and Found for Personal Likings

The process of Gum Bichromate Printing is actually an old photographic printing process popularized for producing coloured photographic images, once about a hundred and sixty years ago. However, with the arrival of the of colour negatives, the process was soon abandoned and was gradually replaced by the modern emulsions.

However, I chose to reinterpret my personal images with this discarded printing process particularly for all the complications involved in it. It is exactly because of the long and complex materials and procedures involved that provide me with the enjoyable and necessary time and space for me to develop the concepts for the images fully.

A Much Wider Interpretation

So from where I see it, the title of Lost and Found actually has the potential to allow a much more open interpretation as - positive and negative, in and out, open and closed, etc., encompassing both visual, virtual, physical, abstract and concrete aspects meanings from the phrase.
