Whakaki Genealogy

Whakaki Genealogies A short history of some of the eponymous ancestors of Whakaki.

Whakaki Subtribes
Whakaki people regard 3 hapu or sub-tribes as belonging to Whakaki. These sub-tribes are discussed here.

Whakaki Legends
Like most small villages/places of New Zealand, Whakaki has its stories and legends that lend to its nature. Whakaki is no different. Here I relate the story of Hine o Rangi, the lovely Maori miss of this particular story has been immortalized by lending her name to our maunga/mountain.

Whakaki Sub-tribes

Whakaki people regard 3 hapu or subtribes as belonging to Whakaki; Ngati Hine, Ngati Hinepua, and Ngai TeIpu.
On this page I will draw on some historical information relevant to these hapu, taken from the work of Katherine Orr-Nimmo, 7 April 1998, entitled 'The Land and the Blackberry'. Where able I have included genealogy to that tipuna. In the case of TeIpu, the reader may refer here.

Evidence from ancestors of the Whakaki area

In the 1868 Hereheretau hearing, 'Areta TeRito said he was of Ngati Hine and lived at Whakaki.' Te Rito claimed through Hinepua. (Katherine Orr-Nimmo, The Land and the Blackberry, 1998)
"In the matter of the partitioning of the Hereheretau block 1889 Hoani Ngarara applied on behalf of those who had not sold their interests. 'Areta TeRito argued that there was an ancestral boundary through the centre of the block. He claimed that Ngati Hinepua used to be on the east side of this boundary and Ngati Hine on the west side. He said that Ngati Hinepua, had handed over their rights to TeIpu to gain protection'. (Orr-Nimmo) -At this time, the conflicting evidence given from Hoani Ngarara and TeRito relating to this latter matter as to who occupied which side, initiating the following reply from the judge..'the court does not find that the alleged boundary between Ngati Hine and Ngai TeIpu said to pass through this block is established.

A feature of this case according to Orr-Nimmo was the apparent lack of clarity about the hapu affiliation of TeRito-'At the time of my ancestor TeIpu, he was brought on this land as chief of the tribe NgaiTeIpu'. He said "Ngati Hine brought my ancestor TeIpu to be chief over them and their lands.'

Furthermore, evidence he gave in the MLC sitting 1890 re; Hereheretau No.2 and TeKahaatureia -'My hapu is Ngai TeKapuamatotoru. I live at Wairoa and Whakaki. I do not descend from Kahukura. Hinepua is my ancestor".
New Zealand Maori Sub-tribe/Hapu
For the sake of the uninitiated, I will try to describe a sub-tribe or what is better known to Maori as 'hapu'. Basically a hapu is a descent group of kin who are linked primarily by their direct descent from a common ancestor, through which Maori organized and still organize their lives.
The Maori political and social system has been substantially modified since the era before European contact, and is still changing and developing in the 21st. century.
Arguably, the political and social system was and is dynamic, continuously modifying like its technology in response to such phenomena as environmental change and population expansion.
