Whakaki Legends
Like most small villages/places of New Zealand, Whakaki has its stories and legends that lend to its nature. Whakaki is no different. Here I relate the story of Hine o Rangi, the lovely Maori miss of this particular story has been immortalized by lending her name to our maunga/mountain.

Kirituna Korero
A monthly newsletter/panui edited and presented by Aaron "the baron" Munro, son of Pura and Wai Munro. A newsy item with a special Aaron flavour, that has a round up of the news and events of the Whakaki whanau, living here and away. A must read.

Hine o Rangi

A long time ago in a forest at Whakaki, lived a beautiful maiden called Hine O Rangi.
Whenever mist covered a certain hill,(which now bears her name), she would row down to the bar to meet her lover- a young chief
from across the sea.
The Gods were angry. She was one of theirs and she was in love with a mortal. In their anger, they caused the hills to rise where there was once water. Thus preventing the lovers from meeting. Hine O Rangi pined for her lover, and died broken-hearted.
Now today, whenever the bar is opened, there is a little shower. Hine pining for her lost love. When she is finished, her spirit goes off to meet her love, where he is forever waiting, at a place called Moremore, near the Napier breakwater.

A Maori Translation

Ka mate a Hine O Rangi.
I enei ra, ahakoa he pehea te pai o te ra maringi mai ai te ua. Ko Hine o Rangi tenei. E tangi ana ia.

Waka Huia will embark on a journey through Whakaki as elders recite the legends, stories and Whakapapa of their region and impart to us the knowledge passed down by their ancestors. (Information taken straight from their site; http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/413551/903427 Take a look at the video clips, they may not be there very long.
