A long time ago in a forest at Whakaki, lived a beautiful maiden called Hine O Rangi. Whenever mist covered a certain hill,(which now bears her name), she would row down to the bar to meet her lover- a young chief from across the sea. The Gods were angry. She was one of theirs and she was in love with a mortal. In their anger, they caused the hills to rise where there was once water. Thus preventing the lovers from meeting. Hine O Rangi pined for her lover, and died broken-hearted. Now today, whenever the bar is opened, there is a little shower. Hine pining for her lost love. When she is finished, her spirit goes off to meet her love, where he is forever waiting, at a place called Moremore, near the Napier breakwater.
A Maori Translation
Ka mate a Hine O Rangi. I enei ra, ahakoa he pehea te pai o te ra maringi mai ai te ua. Ko Hine o Rangi tenei. E tangi ana ia.
