The following is an extract from writings of Joyce Naomi Lee (m.Pothan) about her great grandmother Te Paea Newa
"I was taken to visit her on several occasions when very young. She impressed me as tall, slim, very straight in stature and very proud, and seemed unbending. She lived in a beautiful two storied house, set in lovely grounds with tall gums and a lot of shrubs beautifully laid out on the opposite side of the road from the existing pa. Even at that early age, I was aware of the gums and shrubbery. I must have inherited that gift from Captain Hook. Incidently gum leaves were part of our lives, as Granny used the liquid from them after boiling, for bathing us when we had colds. She kept fluid back to drink. We were also given carrot juice. procured by grating and squeezing through a muslin cloth, for a tonic and cut up onions added with boiling water and sugar added for a cough. I got so sick of carrots I could not eat them for a long time after I grew up.
It must have been a lot of work for the dear soul to do on my behalf, it's a pity one does not appreciate these facts til much later in life. I attribute all these knowledgeable facts to Captain Hook. Being at sea for long periods he would need a great deal of expertise in that direction. He undoubtedly was well educated to be a captain, and in that day and age his folks must have been well off to provide him with such an education. He must have taught granny to read, as she read the bible always. He probably taught the others too. Captain Hook is buried in the Napier cemetery and is mentioned in "The History of Hawkes Bay", as well as in the book "Old Wairoa", so also is my father Fred
Vaughan."
