Byakko: God of the West

Byakko no Miko: Suzuno Oosugi
Suzuno Oosugi is the daughter of Takao Oosugi, good friend to Einosuke Okuda. Einosuke entrusted him with the book, because it could not be destroyed, just before he killed Takiko and then took his own life. He told Takao to hide the book away where no one could reach it, but it was obviously unsuccessful because Suzuno ends up getting pulled into the book. She arrives in Sailo, the country of the west, ruled by the beast god Byakko. She becomes Byakko no Miko some hundred years after Takiko left the book.
Suzuno Oosugi is the daughter of Takao Oosugi, the man who was entrusted with the "Shi Jin Ten Chi Sho" by Einosuke Okuda, right before he killed his daughter Takiko. When Einosuke entrusted Takao with the book, he warned him not to let any others touch it. Despite this warning, however, Suzuno was the next person to open up the book, and she was absorbed into the book world, like her friend Takiko. Suzuno ended up in Sailo, the country of the west; there she became the second Miko, Byakko No Miko. All of this happened between sixty-five and seventy years our time (ninety years in the book’s time) before Miaka’s story begins.
According to her beloved Tatara, Suzuno was a gentle and loving girl. She was tall and slender with soft blue eyes and brown hair, which she wore in two long braids. As far as I know, when she appeared, there was no opposing nation that wanted to conquer Sailo (Kutou must have still been smarting over their failure to conquer Hokkan a hundred years before ^_^). She gathered the Byakko Seishi and summoned Byakko to make her wishes come true. I guess her will must have been much stronger than Takiko’s because she withstood the beast god and was not devoured.
Like Miaka, Suzuno fell in love with one of her Seishi, Tatara, who loved her in return. The two wished to remain together after Byakko was summoned, but the beast god replied that that was one wish he could not grant. Because Suzuno’s duty was done, she was returned to her own world and the two were forced to separate. But they vowed to love each other always, swearing that as long as they still felt the same, they would always be together.
Suzuno went on to remarry and have children, but, as fate would have it, she and Tatara died at the exact same moment in the real and the book world, and were finally reunited after death. *sniff*

Tatara, like Tamahome, fell in love with his Miko. After she returned to her own world, his fellow Seishi cast a spell on him to keep him looking young so he could protect Suzuno’s shinzaho, a mirror she had had with her during the ceremony. However, the spell would age the inside of his body quicker than was normal if he left the Byakko shrine. Tatara was captured by Nakago and chained in a room in attempts to procure the shinzaho by force. Outside the shrine, his insides began to age rapidly. Tatara would not give up his Suzuno’s shinzaho, however, until Miaka appeared. Deceived by Yui, Yui takes the shinzaho for herself and although Tatara tries to stop her and fights bravely against Miboshi, his body can no longer handle it and he dies the exact moment an aged Suzuno dies in the real world. Their souls cross dimensions and they are finally reunited.

Tokaki is one of the still-living Byakko Seishi who helped to protect the Genbu no Miko when she was there. Presumably, it was during that time when he and Subaru fell in love and eventually married. Tokaki appears first as an old man (although still strong) but later reverts back to his 19 year old self, a rather handsome young rogue. As his old self, he rescues Tamahome when he falls from a cliff, stabbed by an illusion of Tomo’s. Tokaki uses a pressure point to release Tamahome from the illusion and we are stunned to discover that Tokaki isTamahome’s old master. He ran into an eleven-year old Tamahome while in Konan six years back. He must have realized Tamahome was a Seishi because the village children were making fun of the symbol on his forehead, calling him “little ghost.” Tokaki trained Tamahome in the martial arts as well as some scholastics.
For an old man, he is still very active, and very into women. He’s a bit perverted as he couldn’t stop staring at or talking about a half-naked Miaka after Tamahome saved her. Tokaki is also a bit insensitive and doesn’t take into account others emotions when giving orders, but he believes he is doing what’s best. Because of what happened between Tatara and Suzuno, he orders Tamahome to forget his love for Miaka so he wouldn’t have to suffer as much when she returned to her own world. It is only his concern for them that he forces Tamahome to do such a cruel thing.
Even though his duty as a Genbu Seishi ended many decades ago, he still takes pride in his position.

She must really love Tokaki to put up with his perverse ways ^_^ She was incredibly beautiful when she was young, which was probably why Tokaki fell in love with her. She is still very strong and even bosses around Tokaki a bit.
