Design Project Description
Project title: Design and Prototype of an Optical Lens System (Project to be completed in 2003-2004)

Photonic Systems are being employed in medical, industrial, telecommunications at ever increasing rates. A common element to virtually all systems is the optical front end: the lens system.

The project will involve defining multiple lens dimensions using Fourier and Geometric Optics and building a telescope capable of extracting a clear image of a star at the great distance. The telescope will in turn be used on a CCD or CMOS Camera System (to be designed by another group). The overall system is that of a Mars Rover, which will be able scan the entire planet and take in important data in the shortest time possible.

Our team will perform system trade-offs, designs and prototype a simple telephoto lens system. We will employ modern optical design tools such as CODE V in our design. This will be made available by the Photonics Researchh Ontario PRO). The main purpose of CODE V will be to test the telescope for proper operation after it has been built. Results will be taken and adjustments, if necessary, will be made.
