SECTION IX: Continuous Draft Rules
Continuous Draft Arena leagues will follow the Arena-The League for Magic
Standard Floor Rules, and the Arena-The League
for Magic Rules for Limited-Environment Formats,
except for the following additions and modifications:
1. Decks will be constructed using the contents of specified starter deck(s)
and/or booster pack(s) to be determined at the beginning of each cycle of
play. Players may add as many lands as they want before each duel. They
are responsible for providing their own land.
2. In the case of 1 (one) card missing from either a starter deck or
booster pack, the following procedure should be followed. The official or
retailer must verify that a card is missing and determine whether it is
from a starter deck or a booster pack, and which set or expansion. The league
official or retailer will then open an additional booster pack or starter
deck, shuffle the cards, and draw 1 (one) card. The remainder of the booster
pack or starter deck should be saved by the retailer to be used if the situation
should reoccur. If more than 1 (one) card is missing from either a booster
pack or starter deck, then the product should be replaced.
3. Players may not wage ante.
4. Depending on the cards used in the draft, at the sole discretion
of the Director of Arena-The League for Magic, players may be allowed
to remove cards from their decks before their first draft. If this rule
is invoked, it will be announced to all league players at the time of player
registration.
Before the first draft only, each player removes X cards of his or her choice
(where X is an amount determined by the Director of Arena). This is the
only time a player may remove cards from play.
5. Before each match, players must allow their opponent to look through
their deck. Both players should count each other's decks to make sure they
contain the proper number of cards. Players may take up to 5 (five) minutes
for this process. Players may not take notes about their opponent's deck.
The cards are shuffled together, and placed in a pile face down. The players
determine who goes first by flipping a coin. The league official deals 4
(four) cards are from the pile face up onto the table. The player going
first picks 1 (one) of the cards for his or her deck. The other player then
picks 2 (two) of the remaining 3 (three) cards for his or her deck. The
first player gets the last card. The league official deals 4 (four) more
cards face up, but this time the other player picks first. Players go through
the entire pile (alternating who picks first) in this manner until all the
cards have been drafted. Players may then add as many basic lands of any
type to produce a play deck of at least 40 (forty) cards. Players are responsible
for providing their own land.
6. After players have finished drafting, they may take up to 15 (fifteen)
minutes to construct their decks.
7. The player who drafted second plays first during the first duel.
The player who loses a duel always begins the next duel of the match. The
first player in a tied duel plays first again in the next duel of the match.
8. After the match is over, players retrieve their land, but keep the
deck they just used to begin their next match, which always starts with
a draft. Players' decks may change from match to match, but the number of
cards will always be the same.
9. There are no restricted cards for this style of play.
10. All ante cards are banned from play. If a player drafts any ante
cards, those cards must remain in the player's sideboard. If any ante cards
appear in a player's deck, the official may interpret it as a Declaration
of Forfeiture.
