What is Guiding Light and how did it come to exist? Well it all started as one persons 3rd year Media arts project . The title of the project is 'Collaborative and contextual' which in non specific terms means; either working with somebody, some company or defining what is collaborative in terms of your project, or being commisioned to do a piece of work for somebody. (Free of charge in most cases!) It was hailed as a perfect opportunity to be in a working environment and could help with future plans post graduation. When I was set with the brief I wanted to do something that I would enjoy and could extend for my future (possibly) I started by looking into alternative worship and focused on trying to arrange an event typething in collaboration with a church and/or a nightclub. Guiding light became the name I was going to use to market the event under so its a kind of corperate logo.
Guiding light is an idea (at
present) based on providing event management, design ideas, portfolios and visual promotion work/guidance for Christian churches.
Far from trying to force ideas to happen my role is as a facilitator. The
main philosophy group that Guiding light aims to work for is that of the 18-30s. (However I aim to have a relevent world view that is extendable to all age groups.)
This is because currently this is the age range that is lacking in faith because of a minority of relevant events that seek to introduce faith in U.K Churches. The 18 - 30s have a specific world view, which is not always bound by age but needs to be understood For more details on
this read Generation X by Douglas coupland or Coercion by Douglas Ruskoff The other reason why Guiding light
works mainly for this age range is because I am the sole author of G.L my role will
come under analysis. " The explanation of a piece of work is always sought
in the man or woman who produced it, as it were in the end, through the more
or less transparent allegory of the fiction, the voice of a single person
the author confiding in me." Barthes - Death of the author. As a member
of Generation X and a Christian I feel that my cultural frame of reference
is where the idea for G.L has come from, I am not working with a group I do
not understand. I have also worked at St Saviours church to design effective sets/ideas for the 7-14 yr old year group this has been immensley fun and successful but does require a huge team of willing helpers to get covered in paint!
At present I am not working on anything as I am trying to earn a living in London I hope to be involved in something soon but that depends on my limited free time and geographical position. The last event I was involved in was The Promised Land at Riverside Christian Center (Exeter) this came about because I approached
them with an idea for an event as a member of the congregation and found out
that there are a number of different people who are interested in working
for and with the 18 - 30s. From a meeting we had we decided not to produce
an event and to put together an Ideas portfolio which could be used
to detail our needs and research other projects. Which will help us when we
do put on an event. We started running The Promised land which is featured on page 2 of this site. This is the first project for Guiding light and depending
on the out come we shall see what the future holds. . .
