Previous Shows (Note: I'm looking for a review for the 26th) The first ever "Rockit Festival" was a success! Although there were some problems when the festival first kicked off (the time was delayed), once people started flooding in, it was great. We (Karen and meeee) were part of the Rockit street team (that's why we had those funki flyers and posters to give around) and so got crew passes (hahaha felt so important). I was looking forward to Rockit like nothing else in the world especially knowing that one of my favourite bands "Supergrass" would be playing and we'd get a chance to get to talk to them. The only other people I knew in the Line-up were Uncle Joe and Whence he Came but that meant more new bands to absorb. When Supergrass pulled out last minute, du-uh we were in some was disappointed but we just looked forward to Rockit as a whole. So we got there on the day, got to Victoria Park where we got our passes off Justin. Then we just helped around, putting bits and pieces together and got to watch the opening band "Garoupa" play. They were soooo FUNKI! They played a mix of blues, rock and funk with frontman Alex doing guitar and vocals. They did this one song "Take a picture of Me" which I still remember VERY clearly because it was just so cute. When people started coming in, we got to watch "The Feelers" from New Zealand...and they were awesome...especially their song "Venus". We also caught local band "The Academy" which I really really really really liked. Their songs were real funki and I was seriously amazed by the drummer. His drumming was PACKED full of fill-ins! "AudioTraffic" was next and they were great as well. Until this point, I had no idea we had such great band in Hong Kong! Audio Traffic vocalist and guitarist Adrian Da Silva dedicated a number to Supergrass saying "we love them anyways" which was really cute :D After "AudioTraffic" was the much-anticipated act - "Uncle Joe" by this time, the little tent thing where the shows were being played was packed FULL of people...we still got to stand at the front and got full view of the guys. They did a few numbers during which Andrew's glasses flew off and Tom asked the audience to donate money to buy Andrew a better pair of frames hahaha...and when Andrew took a long time to set up his gear, Tom did an annoyed sigh and went "It's your glasses dude". HAHAHAHA...being Uncle Joe, the show was great as expected. They did "row across the sea" aong with several other numbers and I HAVE to mention their tees. Tom had the nice "I Love HK" (yesssssssssss) tee on, I don't remember what Andrew had on (something black), Ben Tse has a yellow Buddhiston tee (I HAVE THE GREEN ONE!!) and as always, Ben Matthews had no tee on :D They have the nicest tees. I remember during Milk Farm, Ben Tse had this great "AC/DC Back in Black" tee on. Anyways...after Watching Uncle Joe..we walked around the place and we went to get Uncle Joe's EP "Send home to Victoria", Uncle Joe's blue tee (which we later got them to autograph...hahha feel so "teeny-bopper-ish") and I got my lovely green "Buddhiston" tee which I love so much and still wear even though it's the middle of winter. What made it even better was Tom recognised us (well, if you had two teenage girls asking you for pictures every 5 seconds...you'd remember them as well) and we talked briefly...hahaha and Andrew and Tom started complainging about the band that was playing and saying that they were "boring". Anyways, by the time Uncle Joe came off, we were all really tired. The food was kinda expensive and limited so that was one thing we could have improved on. Anyways, I was waiting forever foe the next show - Japan's "Electric Eel Shock". After "Supergrass" who couldn't make it, "EES" were the highest rated band and you could see everyone was anxious to see the "monsters of rock'n'roll" because everyone just rushed to the stage as soon as they got on. The street team people kept their bags next to the stage so all the Electric Eel Shock guys were unpacking their guitars in our bag area and we got to talk to them. I asked Gian (the drummer) for a photo but the camera stupidly enough ran out of batteries so that wasn't good (and he did this really cute pose too!!!) and I got to say "good luck" to him :D as soon as they got on, the crowd went WILD! They opened with a number (I don't remember the name) but Aki (the vocalist and guitarist) kept going "I want suicide Rock'n'Roll" so I'm guessing it's called something like that...and I REALLY liked that song. They then played a number called "Japan meets Chinese in the USA" and that name is SOOOOO cute!! Electric Eel Shock blew the whole crowd away...their music is SO POWERFUL!! I don't usually like their style of music but I loved them because they are so unbelievable live. We left early (stupidly enough) and so I didn't get to catch their whole show but I heard it way fun. They were shouting "SEX, DRUGS and E-MAIL!!!" hahaha...they are soooo weird...in a good way. Rockit was amazing and for those of you who didn't go - Shame on you!! Next time you go - here's some advice: make sure you have batteries in you camera!!! |
