Lois's interest in public education was sparked in the late 1970's when she learned that her first son was dyslexic. At that time, there were no programs in the public schools to meet her son's educational needs. Lois, therefore, started her own program. This tutorial program developed into a full time program at the James Still Learning Center and has now helped thousands of dyslexic students and their families throughout Eastern Kentucky. Lois has served as secretary of the Hindman Settlement School's Board of Directors since the early 80's.

In recognition of her extensive efforts to assist students with special needs achieve their goals, Lois has been appointed to several statewide educational initiatives. In 1990, she was elected chairwoman of the prestigious Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence after serving on the Committee since its origin in 1980. Lois was also appointed by the Governor to the University of Kentucky's Board of Trustees in 1992 where she served as secretary until 1997.
